Tektronix TICS5000 Current Shunt, 5 Ω Wideband, 250 MHz, 200 mA for TICP Probes

The Tektronix TICS5000 current shunt is a 5 Ω wideband shunt for TICP IsoVu current measurement setups. It is the highest-resistance TICS model, built for currents up to 200 mA, with 250 MHz typical bandwidth. One shunt per listing.

Description

The Tektronix TICS5000 current shunt is a 5 Ω wideband resistor module for TICP IsoVu isolated current probes. A current shunt turns current into voltage: the probe reads the drop across a known resistance, and you divide by that resistance. At 5 Ω, this is the highest value in the TICS range, so it suits the smallest currents. This listing covers one TICS5000, not a multipack.

Small currents, large signal

In short, high resistance turns a weak current into a healthy voltage. For instance, 100 mA through 5 Ω develops 0.5 V, which is easy for a probe to see. By contrast, the other TICS models would turn that same current into a far smaller signal. That is the main reason to choose this part: it favors resolution at low current over high current range.

Low-current circuits that suit it

Think of auxiliary rails, sensor supplies and control circuits where current stays in the milliamp range. Also consider standby and sleep-mode studies, where a 5 Ω shunt lifts a faint current above the noise. Meanwhile, the 250 MHz typical bandwidth leaves room for fast edges on those rails. Keep in mind that the probe, shunt and interconnect together set the bandwidth you actually get.

Watch the insertion loss

A 5 Ω part in series drops more voltage than a milliohm shunt does. So check that your circuit can tolerate that drop at full current. Then verify power dissipation and the pulse-current curve for your pulse width. Finally, follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings for the whole measurement path.

TICS5000 questions

What is the most current the TICS5000 can carry?

The source lists 200 mA maximum DC and 200 mA maximum pulse current, with derating for pulse duration and waveform. Its dynamic range is ±0.1 A.

Does a single order include all four TICS values?

No. You get one 5 Ω shunt. The photo shows four TICS models only to present the family.

Does the shunt include a probe or oscilloscope?

No. A compatible TICP probe, a suitable shunt cable or tip, and an oscilloscope are separate items.
