Tektronix TICS0005 Current Shunt, 5 mΩ Wideband, 12 A DC, 200 A Pulse

The Tektronix TICS0005 current shunt is the lowest-resistance TICS model: 5 mΩ, with a ±100 A dynamic range for TICP IsoVu probes. It carries 12 A DC and 200 A pulses with derating. One shunt per listing.

Description

Power device testing often means short bursts of very high current with fast edges. For that work, the Tektronix TICS0005 current shunt offers the lowest resistance in the TICS family: 5 mΩ. It is a wideband shunt that pairs with Tektronix TICP IsoVu isolated current probes, which measure the small voltage across it. Because the resistance is so low, it can follow currents up to its ±100 A dynamic range. Also note that the listing covers one shunt.

Two hundred amps for an instant

The headline figure is a 200 A maximum pulse current. That rating comes with derating for pulse duration and waveform, so read it as a short-event limit. By comparison, the maximum DC current is 12 A. However, a peak pulse value never extends that continuous rating. In practice, the shunt fits tests where large peaks ride on a modest average current.

What the Tektronix TICS0005 current shunt offers

  • 5 mΩ resistance, the lowest of the four TICS values
  • ±100 A dynamic range
  • 12 A maximum DC current and 200 A maximum pulse current
  • 250 MHz typical bandwidth with a 1.6 ns typical rise time
  • DC gain accuracy of less than 2%
  • Operating temperature from -40 °C to +85 °C
  • Built-in fuse rated to interrupt up to 400 V, per the maker’s conditions

Where milliohm sensing pays off

Above all, a 5 mΩ shunt adds very little resistance to the current path. As a result, it disturbs high-current circuits less than the higher TICS values would. For example, 100 A through 5 mΩ gives only 0.5 V across the shunt. That makes it a natural candidate for inverter, motor drive and EV power stage work, as well as battery pulse testing. Keep in mind that the probe, shunt and interconnect together decide the usable bandwidth.

Before the first pulse

First, compare your pulse width against the manufacturer’s pulse-current curve. Second, verify shunt power dissipation at your duty cycle. Third, follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings for the full measurement path.

TICS0005 buyer FAQ

Which TICS value handles the most current?

This one. At 5 mΩ, the TICS0005 has a ±100 A dynamic range, 12 A DC and a 200 A pulse rating.

Can it carry 200 A steadily?

No. The 200 A figure applies to pulses with derating. For steady current, the limit is 12 A DC.

Will I receive the whole TICS family?

No. You get a single TICS0005. The photo groups four models only to show the family.
