Tektronix TCP0030A Current Probe, TekVPI AC/DC Clamp, DC to 120 MHz, 5 A and 30 A Ranges

The Tektronix TCP0030A current probe is a fast TekVPI AC/DC clamp: DC to 120 MHz, 30 A RMS, and 5 A or 30 A ranges for detail on small and mid-size currents.

Description

Fast power stages need a fast current probe. With bandwidth up to 120 MHz, the Tektronix TCP0030A current probe covers that need. It is an AC/DC current probe that closes around one wire and plugs into a TekVPI scope. The scope powers it and shows current directly in amps. Lost in HCM provides it in Vietnam for rent or for sale.

Speed with a fine low range

Tektronix specifies the TCP0030A from DC to at least 120 MHz, with 30 A RMS and a 50 A maximum peak pulse. The peak rating holds only within its pulse-width and amp-second limits. Two ranges, 5 A and 30 A, let you match the clamp to the signal. So a small ripple on the 5 A range still shows clear detail. For DC, expect ±1% typical accuracy, with ±3% as the warranted limit.

How it compares with other TekVPI clamps here

  • TCP0030A: at least 120 MHz and 30 A RMS, with a 5 mm conductor limit.
  • TCP0020: at least 50 MHz and 20 A RMS, also with a 5 mm jaw.
  • TCP0150: at least 20 MHz and 150 A RMS, with a much wider jaw.

In other words, choose the TCP0030A for fast edges on thin wires, and the TCP0150 for heavy cables.

Design work that suits the Tektronix TCP0030A current probe

Power supply designers use it to watch inductor and switch current while they tune a loop. It also helps with power-loss checks, since you can pair it with a voltage probe on the same scope. In addition, firmware teams can see how load current changes as a board moves between modes. For quick checks on a pilot line, the clamp needs no solder work.

Using it well

Degauss and zero before each test, because stored magnetism shifts the DC level. Keep the conductor at 5 mm or less, and clamp a single wire. Also confirm that your scope supports TekVPI and has probe power to spare. Then follow the manual on insulation, voltage category and when to switch off the circuit.

Questions about the TCP0030A

Is the Tektronix TCP0030A current probe right for switching supplies?

Yes, it fits well, because it reads DC plus fast edges up to 120 MHz. Check that peak currents stay within its pulse limits.

Why use the 5 A range?

It gives more detail on small currents. Switch to 30 A when the load grows.

What scope do I need?

You need a supported TekVPI scope with enough probe power. Share the model with Lost in HCM when you ask for a quote.
