Description
Line-level waveforms often carry fast edges as well as high voltage. The Tektronix TPP0850 high-voltage probe aims at both, within its ratings. It is a passive, single-ended probe with 50X attenuation and 800 MHz bandwidth. It suits ground-referenced signals that a standard probe cannot reach. Lost in HCM rents and sells it, and arranges service on request.

Ratings in plain terms
Tektronix rates the probe at 2.5 kV peak and 1000 V RMS CAT II. However, that rating falls with frequency, so the headline number does not hold across the whole band. Pulse duration is a separate limit as well. Therefore, check the full data sheet for the derating details. So follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings.
Light loading for its class
Input loading is 40 MΩ with 1.8 pF. Low capacitance matters on fast switching nodes, because the probe draws less charge from each edge. On supported instruments, compensation runs automatically. Readout coding also tells those scopes the probe scaling. The cable is 1.3 m nominal.
Where the Tektronix TPP0850 high-voltage probe fits
- Ground-referenced nodes in power supplies, inverters and motor drives, inside the rating.
- Switching edges where 800 MHz shows ringing a slower probe would smooth over.
- Labs that want auto compensation on a supported scope, with no manual trimming.
TPP0850 or P5100A?
Both share the same 2.5 kV peak rating. Still, the TPP0850 offers more bandwidth at 800 MHz, against 500 MHz on the P5100A. It also uses 50X instead of 100X and adds less capacitance. On the other hand, the P5100A has a longer 2 m cable and a manual 7 to 30 pF compensation range.

TPP0850 FAQ
What does 50X mean on screen?
The probe divides the signal by 50. So set the scope to 50X, or let a supported scope read the probe coding.
Does the Tektronix TPP0850 high-voltage probe need a special scope?
Automatic compensation and readout coding work on supported instruments. Hence, confirm your scope input with Lost in HCM.
Can it measure a floating node?
The listing describes a single-ended probe for ground-referenced signals. Follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings.
