Description
At 20 GHz, the Tektronix P7720 TriMode probe sits at the top of the P7700 series. It is a differential probe for fast, low-voltage signals. TriMode means one connection can give differential, single-ended and common-mode views. The probe plugs into a TekConnect oscilloscope input, while TekFlex tips make the link to the board. Lost in HCM rents and sells it, and arranges service on request.

Twenty gigahertz at the tip
The listing gives 20 GHz typical bandwidth. It also gives a 27 ps typical rise time, taken from 10 to 90 percent. Both figures depend on the tip and the mode you pick. So a sharp edge on a short lane keeps more of its real shape. In addition, the 4X solder-in tip shows 100 kΩ of differential input resistance. Selected active tips list 0.4 pF between the two inputs.
Common-mode at nearly full speed
The P7720 listing adds one note that the slower models do not carry. In the 20 GHz setup, selected tips work in differential or single-ended mode. Common-mode bandwidth, by contrast, reaches 19 GHz. That gap is small, so you can still watch shared noise on very fast pairs. However, the tip you fit decides which modes you get.
Where the Tektronix P7720 TriMode probe pays off
- Signal-integrity teams that probe the fastest serial lanes on a new board.
- Labs that pair it with a TekConnect scope of similar bandwidth.
- Failure studies on fast links, where the solder joint stays put across all modes.
- Short R&D peaks, when a project needs top speed for weeks rather than years.
Setup notes
First, check your scope model and firmware against the Tektronix support data. A TekConnect socket alone does not prove that an older scope supports this probe. Next, keep the solder-in tip within its 5 V peak-to-peak differential range. Its operating window runs to ±5.25 V. Then keep one physical connection while you switch modes, so the results line up. Always follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings.
Ordering the P7720

P7720 questions
Why does common-mode bandwidth read 19 GHz?
The listing gives 19 GHz for common-mode in the 20 GHz setup. Differential and single-ended modes reach the full figure with selected tips.
Will any TekConnect scope accept the Tektronix P7720 TriMode probe?
Not always. So check the exact scope and firmware with Tektronix data before you order.
Are tips part of the order?
The photo shows a reference setup only. Therefore, list the tips you need and ask Lost in HCM to confirm the contents.
