Tektronix P6022 Current Probe, AC Clamp, 935 Hz to 120 MHz, 1 mA Minimum, 2.12 A RMS

Small, fast currents are the home turf of the Tektronix P6022 current probe. This AC-only clamp covers 935 Hz to 120 MHz and starts at 1 mA. Lost in HCM rents and sells it for lab and test work.

Description

Milliamp-level signals on thin wires can be hard to catch with a large clamp. The Tektronix P6022 current probe solves that with a small jaw and fine sensitivity. It is an AC-only clamp probe with a 935 Hz to 120 MHz range, a 1 mA minimum and capability of 2.12 A RMS or 100 A peak.

Built for small conductors and fast signals

First, the jaw takes conductors up to 2.8 mm across, which suits component leads, jumper wires and thin cables. In addition, the 120 MHz upper limit lets you follow quick current edges in digital and RF circuits. So the P6022 often lives on the R&D bench rather than in the plant.

Bench jobs for the Tektronix P6022 current probe

Electronics R&D teams in Vietnam can use it to view the supply current of a processor or FPGA during boot. It also helps when you trace switching current in a small DC-DC converter. For EMC work, engineers can clamp a single cable conductor to look at high-frequency current on it. Similarly, teaching labs can show how current leads or lags voltage in a resonant circuit.

P6022 or P6021A?

The P6022 reaches higher in frequency and lower in current. On the other hand, the P6021A handles more current, accepts wires up to 5 mm and starts at 120 Hz. Therefore, pick the P6022 for fine signals and the P6021A for heavier power work.

Getting good readings

Close the jaw around one conductor only, because a supply and return pair can cancel. Next, set 1 or 10 mA/mV and scale the scope to match. Also remember that DC and very low frequencies fall outside this AC-only range. Follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings for conductor voltage and limits.

P6022 questions

Can it measure DC current?

No. It works in AC mode only, from 935 Hz upward.

Will it fit around a thick power cable?

Probably not, since the jaw takes up to 2.8 mm. Look at the P6021A for 5 mm conductors.

Is the 100 A figure continuous?

No, it is a peak rating. The RMS rating is 2.12 A.
