Description
One switch on the handle gives this probe two characters. The Tektronix P2221 passive probe is a single-ended passive voltage probe with selectable 1X and 10X attenuation. At 10X it reaches 200 MHz, while at 1X it trades bandwidth for a stronger signal on screen. Lost in HCM rents and sells the Tektronix P2221 passive probe in Vietnam and arranges service on request.

A wider compensation window
Here the compensation range runs from 10 to 25 pF. That figure tells you which scope inputs the probe can balance. Before you order, look up your oscilloscope’s input capacitance and check that it falls inside that window. Its sister model, the P2220, lists 15 to 25 pF, so the P2221 reaches lower input values.
Two modes, two sets of numbers
| Switch | Bandwidth | Input resistance | Input capacitance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10X | 200 MHz | 10 MΩ | 17 pF |
| 1X | 6 MHz | 1 MΩ | 110 pF |
So 10X loads the circuit far less, while 1X avoids dividing a tiny signal by ten. The cable runs 1.5 m in both cases.
When to flip the Tektronix P2221 passive probe to 1X
Use 1X for slow, small signals such as sensor outputs, reference voltages or low-level ripple, where 6 MHz is plenty. For example, a few millivolts of noise stays readable because the probe passes it at full size. However, switch back to 10X for clocks, edges and any node that dislikes extra load. Then, each time, match the scope’s attenuation setting to the switch.
Grounding and safety
Also note that a standard passive probe ground normally sits at earth potential through the oscilloscope. So never clip it to a live mains node or a floating point. Keep the ground lead short for clean edges. For voltage limits and derating, follow the model manual on the Tektronix site.
Teams rent a batch for a training course, a bring-up week or an audit, while labs buy them as standard bench probes. P2221 questions
How does it differ from the P2220?
Both listings give the same bandwidth, attenuation and cable length. The P2221 lists a 10-25 pF compensation range, while the P2220 lists 15-25 pF.
Does 200 MHz apply in both switch positions?
No. That figure applies only at 10X, while at 1X the listing gives 6 MHz.
Will it fit my oscilloscope?
It needs a compatible 1 MΩ input. Check that your scope’s input capacitance sits within 10-25 pF, and confirm model support with Lost in HCM.
