Description
Most bench measurements start with a general-purpose probe, and the P2220 covers that everyday role. The Tektronix P2220 passive probe is a single-ended voltage probe with a 1X/10X switch, a 1.5 m cable and 200 MHz bandwidth in the 10X position. It then links circuit test points to an oscilloscope with a 1 MΩ input. Lost in HCM lists it for rental and for sale, with service on request.

A compensation routine for the Tektronix P2220 passive probe
The probe compensates over 15 to 25 pF of scope input capacitance. First, check that your scope sits inside that window. Then clip the tip to the scope’s calibration output and view the square wave. Next, adjust the probe until the corners look flat, with no overshoot or rounding. Also repeat this whenever you move the probe to another channel or another scope.
Reading the specification
- Bandwidth: 200 MHz at 10X, 6 MHz at 1X.
- Input resistance: 10 MΩ at 10X, 1 MΩ at 1X.
- Input capacitance: 17 pF at 10X, 110 pF at 1X.
- Cable: 1.5 m.
- Voltage limits: see the model manual for category and derating.
Keep it at 10X by default
Leave the switch at 10X for most work. In that position the probe adds less capacitive load, so fast edges keep their shape. The bandwidth also climbs from 6 MHz to 200 MHz. Move to 1X only when a small, slow signal needs more height on screen. Then change the scope’s attenuation as well, so the volts on screen stay true.
Who orders it
Repair shops, school labs and production test teams use passive probes every day, and probes wear out or go missing. So a rental fills a gap during a project peak or a class term, while a purchase replaces a lost probe for good. P2220 questions from the bench
What if I forget to change the scope setting after a switch?
The scope will scale the trace by the wrong factor of ten. So always match the scope attenuation to the probe switch.
Which oscilloscopes can I use it with?
First, the listing asks for a compatible 1 MΩ input whose capacitance falls inside 15-25 pF. Confirm exact model support before you order.
Is it safe on mains circuits?
Not with the ground lead on a live or floating node. Instead, use a rated differential or isolated setup for that work.
