Description
Plenty of signals have no ground pin to clip onto. The Tektronix TDP1000 differential probe measures the voltage between two test points, so neither side has to sit at ground. It offers 1 GHz of bandwidth and a switch between 5X and 50X attenuation, and it plugs into a TekVPI oscilloscope. Lost in HCM supplies it for rental or sale in Vietnam and arranges service on request.

Two attenuation settings, two input windows
At 5X, the probe reads up to ±4.2 V across its inputs. That suits small signals, such as a sense resistor drop or a low-swing data pair. Switch to 50X, and the window grows to ±42 V for larger swings. However, more range means less resolution on small details. So pick 5X whenever the signal fits, and keep 50X for the bigger jobs.
Tektronix TDP1000 differential probe at a glance
| Specification | Value from the listing |
|---|---|
| Bandwidth | 1 GHz |
| Attenuation | 5X / 50X |
| Differential input impedance | 1 MΩ in parallel with 1 pF or less |
| Differential input range | ±4.2 V at 5X; ±42 V at 50X |
| Oscilloscope interface | TekVPI |
The listing quotes these as family-page values. For common-mode limits and derating versus frequency, read the current Tektronix data sheet.
How it sits next to other TDP listings
The TDP0500 shares the same input, ranges and interface, but stops at 500 MHz. Meanwhile, the TDP1500 listing reaches 1.5 GHz with a 1X / 10X switch and a ±8.5 V top range. Therefore, the TDP1000 makes sense when the signal needs more than 500 MHz and more swing than ±8.5 V.
Jobs for a 1 GHz differential probe
Engineers reach for it on CAN, RS-485 and similar bus pairs, on current shunts, and on low-voltage gate-drive signals. It also helps on sensor bridges, where both outputs float above ground. In each case, a single-ended probe would short the reference to scope ground or hide the true difference. Keep the two leads short and the same length, so the probe sees a balanced pair.

TDP1000 questions from buyers
Can it measure mains or high voltage?
No. Its top differential range is ±42 V at 50X, and the listing does not give a high common-mode rating. Follow the manufacturer’s manual and ratings.
Why does my reading look ten times off?
Check the attenuation switch. If the scope expects 5X while the probe sits at 50X, the trace scales wrongly.
Will it work on my scope?
The listing gives TekVPI. So confirm support, adapters and firmware for your exact model with Lost in HCM.
