Description
Routers, switches and optical modules close their cases with small thread-forming screws in plastic and thin metal. Those screws cut their own threads, so some torque goes into the thread before any clamp builds. The Snap-on TQSS1AC torque driver lets test engineers watch that build-up live on a dial. It is a stubby Torqometer basic driver with a U.S. scale, and Lost in HCM lists it with a chart.

Why a live needle suits thread-forming screws
A basic Torqometer has one needle that moves with the load and drops back when you let go. That sounds like a limit, yet it helps on thread-forming screws. For example, you can watch the drive torque rise, level off, and then climb again at seating. As a result, the TQSS1AC shows the gap between drive torque and strip torque on a test sample. Engineers then set the line value between the two.
Network hardware jobs for the Snap-on TQSS1AC torque driver
- Case screws on routers, switches and access points.
- Faceplate and handle screws on rack line cards.
- Shield cans and heat spreaders on module boards.
- Spot audits on screw feeders after a bit or recipe change.
TQSS1A data from catalog CAT1500i
| Item | TQSS1A |
|---|---|
| Model type | Stubby basic (1 needle) |
| Length | 5-1/4 in |
| Range | 192 in-oz / 12 in-lb |
| Increments | 4 in-oz / 1/4 in-lb |
| Case | PB47 storage case |
Snap-on’s U.S. driver table lists the TQSS1A next to its full-length twin, the TQS1A. The table also says a C at the end of the stock number orders a certificate of calibration. Therefore the TQSS1AC is the C form of the TQSS1A.
Reading the TQSS1AC in its best band
Snap-on rates the standard grade within 2% of reading from 20% of full scale to full scale. On this 12 in-lb dial, that band starts at 2.4 in-lb. So targets from there up to about 1.36 N·m suit it well. Because the needle drops back, read it at the moment the screw seats. If your team needs a held peak, the TQSS1FUA follow-up version shares the same range.
Bench care for the TQSS1AC
Keep the driver upright and push only as hard as the bit needs. Also use a fresh bit for strip tests, since a worn tip slips early. Store the Snap-on TQSS1AC torque driver in its PB47 case, and send it for calibration on your plant’s cycle.

Test lab FAQ
What does Basic mean in the TQSS1AC name?
Snap-on uses Basic for models with one needle. The follow-up models add a second needle that stays at the peak.
Is there a full-length version?
Yes, the catalog lists the TQS1A with a 7-3/4 inch body and the same 12 in-lb range.
What does the chart in the title cover?
The source does not say. Ask Lost in HCM which documents ship with the C version.
