Description
Optical and measuring instruments rarely fail from loose screws alone. More often, a screw that went in too tight bends a lens cell, shifts an encoder disk or warps a thin gauge plate. The Snap-on TQS012A torque driver targets that very light band, with a full scale of just 24 in-oz. It is a 7-3/4 inch Torqometer driver with a U.S. basic dial.

Putting a 24 in-oz scale into perspective
Put simply, 24 in-oz equals 1.5 in-lb, or about 0.17 N·m. That is roughly 17 N·cm, a load most fingers apply without noticing. So the TQS012A suits joints where the screw holds a part in place rather than clamping it hard. In addition, the dial steps in 1/2 in-oz, which equals 1/32 in-lb.

Instrument jobs that match the TQS012A
- Retaining ring and lens cell screws in microscopes and camera optics.
- Encoder and resolver mounting screws on small motors.
- Dial gauge, indicator and sensor head assembly screws.
- Small flexure and mirror mount screws on lab benches.
For each of these, the instrument maker sets the value, so check the service data first.
Technique at very low torque
Rest the TQS012A on the screw and let its weight seat the bit. Then turn with two fingers instead of a full grip, since a fist overshoots easily at this scale. Because the basic needle drops back when you release, read it at the stop point. Also, Snap-on guarantees 2% of reading only from 20% of full scale. Thus, keep targets above about 4.8 in-oz.
When a different size suits better
Below that band, the 16 in-oz TQS008A or the 8 in-oz TQS004A gives finer control. On the other hand, the TQS025A covers 48 in-oz if values climb. For a held peak at 24 in-oz, the TQS012FUA adds a follow-up pointer, while the stubby TQSS012A shortens the body to 5-1/4 inches.
Instrument technician FAQ
What does the Snap-on TQS012A torque driver read in N·cm?
Its full scale of 24 in-oz works out to about 17 N·cm. Each 1/2 in-oz step is about 0.35 N·cm.
Is a stubby TQS012A available?
Yes. Snap-on lists the TQSS012A, a 5-1/4 inch stubby basic model with the same 24 in-oz scale.
Can the TQS012A sit on a clean bench?
Snap-on does not publish a cleanroom rating. So follow your own clean bench rules and wipe the tool before use.
