Description
Dam owners in Vietnam inspect spillway gates, intake gates and hoist frames during each dry season. The Snap-on TEX2003TFUC torque wrench helps those crews measure large bolts and log every value. It is a U.S.-reading Torqometer T-handle head with a follow-up needle. In addition, Lost in HCM lists it with a chart and tags it for hydroelectricity work.

Gate and hoist bolting at a dam
Spillway gates turn on heavy trunnions, and their hoists hang from steel frames over the crest. Their anchor and splice bolts carry big loads in every flood season. So many maintenance plans call for a torque check in the dry months. With the TEX2003TFUC, a fitter pulls to the value in the work pack and then steps back. The second needle stays put, so a supervisor can read it and sign the sheet.
Snap-on TEX2003TFUC torque wrench data
| Item | TEX2003TFU (base code) |
|---|---|
| Input drive, female square | 1 in |
| Output drive, male square | 1 in |
| Full scale | 2,000 ft-lb |
| Dial | U.S. reading, two needles |
| Optional handles | 82TQP T bar, 85TQP extension handle |
These values come from the U.S. T-handle table in Snap-on’s CAT1500i catalog. The same page says that a C at the end of a stock number orders the version with a certificate of calibration. Snap-on’s 2005 Torqometer list also shows this head at 2,000 ft-lb with 1-inch drives. However, we leave the dial step out, because the catalog text does not print it clearly.
Why a follow-up head suits dam records
Dam safety files need a number, not just a yes. A click wrench only tells the fitter that it hit its setting. By contrast, the follow-up needle on the Snap-on TEX2003TFUC torque wrench keeps the highest reading after the pull. As a result, the log shows what each bolt really got.
Handles, posture and safe pulls
The head takes a T bar or extension handle in its 1-inch female input. Then the socket goes on the 1-inch male output. Snap-on lists the 82TQP T bar and the 85TQP extension handle as options for this size, so check which handle comes with your quote. On a gate walkway, brace your feet, pull slowly and keep the head square to the nut. Also stay within 2,000 ft-lb, and never use the Snap-on TEX2003TFUC torque wrench to free a seized bolt.
Accuracy band and upkeep of the TEX2003TFUC
Lost in HCM places this head in its US Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy group. Snap-on states that grade from 20% of full scale to full scale, in both directions. On this head, the band starts near 400 ft-lb, so it suits gate and hoist bolts with higher targets. Between seasons, wipe off river damp and store the head in a dry room. Then book outside calibration on your own cycle.

Dam maintenance FAQ
What does the C at the end of TEX2003TFUC tell me?
Snap-on’s catalog uses a trailing C for the version with a certificate of calibration. Lost in HCM’s title says with Chart, so ask what paperwork ships with your unit.
Is there a metric version of this head?
Yes. Snap-on’s combination table lists the TEXC2003TFU, which adds a kg·m scale to the same 2,000 ft-lb size.
How do I turn 2,000 ft-lb into N·m?
Multiply by about 1.356. So the full scale is roughly 2,710 N·m, which helps with N·m drawings.
