Description

Repair yards along the Saigon River and in Hai Phong overhaul tugs, barges and fishing boats. Much of that work sits on the drive line, where shaft couplings and propeller fixings take heavy bolts. The Snap-on TEX1003TFUAC Torqometer helps yard fitters record those bolts with a held peak. It is a U.S.-reading T-handle head with a follow-up needle, and Lost in HCM lists it with a chart.

Drive line bolting with the Snap-on TEX1003TFUAC Torqometer

A propeller shaft coupling joins two flanges with a ring of fitted bolts. If one bolt holds less than its neighbors, the coupling can work and wear the bolt holes. So yards tighten them in a set pattern and log the final values. With this head, the second needle keeps the peak while the fitter steps back to read it. In addition, the dial gives a surveyor a clear number to witness.

Feature TEX1003TFUA
Input drive 3/4 in female square
Output drive 1 in male square
U.S. range 1,000 ft-lb

Snap-on prints this row in the U.S. T-handle table of catalog CAT1500i. Its 2005 Torqometer announcement also lists the TEX1003TFUA with a 3/4-inch input and a 1-inch output. In addition, CAT1500i says a C at the end of the stock number orders a certificate of calibration. So the TEX1003TFUAC is the C form of the TEX1003TFUA.

Mixed drives on the TEX1003TFUAC

The head takes its handle through a 3/4-inch female square, yet it drives sockets through a 1-inch male square. As a result, the yard’s 1-inch sockets fit the output directly. Meanwhile, the smaller input keeps the head compact for tight shaft tunnels. Always use sockets in good condition, because a cracked socket can slip under load.

Range fit of the TEX1003TFUAC

Snap-on holds the standard grade within 2% of reading from 20% of full scale to full scale. Here, that band runs from 200 ft-lb to 1,000 ft-lb, or about 1,356 N·m. Therefore, check that your coupling value sits well inside it. Smaller boats may suit the 600 ft-lb TEX602TFUA. By contrast, the largest coupling bolts on big ships may call for a larger head or another method.

Looking after the TEX1003TFUAC in a damp yard

Salt air and bilge water attack steel and dial faces. So wipe the head dry after each job and store it in a dry locker. Also reset the follow-up needle before every bolt, and never use the head to break seized bolts loose. Then send the Snap-on TEX1003TFUAC Torqometer for calibration on the yard’s set cycle.

Ship repair FAQ

Does the TEX1003TFUAC include a T bar?

The catalog lists the 81TQP as an optional handle for this size. Ask Lost in HCM what comes in the box and what to add.

Can I read metric values on it?

No, the dial reads ft-lb only. Multiply by about 1.356 to turn a reading into N·m.

Why choose follow-up over light signal for yard work?

A follow-up head leaves the peak on the dial for the record. A light signal head, such as the TEX1003TLA, shows when you reach a preset value instead.
