Description

Tower cranes rise over almost every big building site in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Erection crews bolt them together, climb them as the building grows, and then take them down again. The Snap-on TESI800A Torqometer gives those crews a dial reading on the mid-size joints. It has a 3/4-inch drive and a newton meter scale up to 800 N·m.

Crane joints that fit an 800 N·m dial

  • Hoist winch and drum frame mounting bolts.
  • Counter-jib platform and ballast bracket bolts.
  • Trolley, hook block and cab bracket bolts.
  • Climbing frame and tie-in collar bolts, where the maker gives a torque.

Many mast and slewing ring joints, however, call for a set preload or a hydraulic tool. In that case, follow the crane maker’s manual, and keep the TESI800A for the joints it covers. Snap-on rates accuracy from 20% of full scale, so the useful band here starts at 160 N·m.

TESI500A or the Snap-on TESI800A Torqometer?

The TESI500A sits one row above in the same table. It also uses a 3/4-inch drive, yet it stops at 500 N·m in 10 N·m steps on a 29-7/8-inch body. So a crew whose values sit between 100 and 500 N·m reads finer marks on the smaller tool. By contrast, joints near 600 or 700 N·m belong on the 800 N·m dial.

Working aloft with a long dial wrench

Up on the jib, the crew has wind, a narrow walkway and a long drop. So tie the Snap-on TESI800A Torqometer to the structure with a tool lanyard before each pull. Also brace your feet and pull smoothly, rather than jerking the handle. Snap-on warns against going past rated torque or using the wrench to break fasteners loose. Therefore, free rusted nuts with a breaker bar first, then check the final value with the dial.

After the job

Wipe dust and rain off the TESI800A, and pack it back into the PB39 case that Snap-on lists for it. Book recalibration on the interval your safety plan sets, since Snap-on says accuracy depends on it.

Site questions on the TESI800A

How hard is a full-scale pull on the TESI800A?

It takes a hard, steady pull near the top of the scale, even on a lever just under 41 inches long. So at height, plan for a second person to steady the work and read the dial.

Which needle setup suits a crane inspection?

The TESI800A has one needle that shows the torque achieved. If an inspector must read a value after the pull, ask about the TESI800FUA with its second needle.

Does the Basic code include a calibration certificate?

Snap-on’s chart note says these stock numbers ship without one, and the C suffix adds it. Lost in HCM can confirm the papers for your order.
