Description

Hydropower stations on the Da and Dong Nai rivers run big machines with big bolts. During an annual overhaul, crews open turbine covers, guide bearing housings and inlet valves. The Snap-on TESI2803 torque wrench lets them pull those joints to a value they can see. Its single needle reads up to 2,800 N·m on a 1 inch square drive, so each step shows on the dial.

Plan the space before the pull

Snap-on lists this wrench at 80 inches long, a little over two meters. That length gives the leverage a 2,800 N·m joint needs. However, it also means the crew needs a clear arc around each bolt. So walk the job first, mark tight spots, and plan a torque multiplier where the handle cannot swing.

Overhaul tasks in the Snap-on TESI2803 torque wrench range

Snap-on promises its Standard grade within 2% of reading once the load passes 20% of full scale. On this dial, that means 560 N·m and above. Typical hydro plant joints in that band include:

  • Turbine head cover and wicket gate linkage bolts, where the procedure gives a torque.
  • Generator bracket bolts, as well as stator frame anchor bolts.
  • Penstock and inlet valve flange bolts.
  • Crane runway and gantry rail clip bolts in the powerhouse.

Many large studs in these machines use hydraulic tensioning instead. Follow the maker’s method, and use the dial only where a torque value applies.

TESI2803 data in brief

Snap-on’s CAT1500i catalog gives the TESI2803 a 1 inch square drive and a 2,800 N·m scale in 50 N·m steps. In addition, the body runs 80 inches long and 4-13/32 inches wide. Meanwhile, head depth comes to 2-1/8 inches, not counting the drive. However, no storage case appears in that row. The same table also lists a TESI2803FU follow-up and a TESI2803L signal model.

1 inch or 1-1/2 inch drive?

A twin model, the TESI2805, carries this 2,800 N·m scale on a 1-1/2 inch drive instead. Choose the Snap-on TESI2803 torque wrench when your sockets and multipliers use a 1 inch square. On the other hand, pick the larger drive when your heavy socket set uses 1-1/2 inch.

Handling a two-meter dial

Carry the wrench with two people where you can, and keep the dial face up. Then lay it flat on a padded bench, never on a gantry rail. In addition, Snap-on warns against exceeding rated torque or breaking fasteners loose with a Torqometer. So free rusted nuts with a slugging wrench first. After the overhaul, book periodic recalibration, as the catalog advises.

Overhaul team FAQ

Does the TESI2803 show ft-lb?

No. It sits in Snap-on’s newton meter table, so it reads N·m only. That top value works out to about 2,065 ft-lb.

Can it hold the final value for the log?

The Basic model has one needle only. For a second needle that marks the torque achieved, ask about the TESI2803FU.

Does it work counterclockwise?

Yes. Snap-on states the 2% rating in both directions, which helps on reverse-thread joints.
