Description
Mineral processing plants in Thai Nguyen and Lao Cai grind ore in big ball mills before flotation. Steel balls and rock wear the mill liners fast, so crews reline the shell on a regular cycle. Every new liner plate goes on with long bolts through the shell, and the crew must reach the right torque. The Snap-on TEC803 Torqometer reads that load on a dial in kg·m and ft-lb. It drives through a 1-inch square and measures 66-13/16 inches long.

Relining work with the Snap-on TEC803 Torqometer
Mill stops cost output by the hour, so relines run to a tight plan. Meanwhile, liner bolts settle as the mill turns, and many plants recheck them after the first hours of running. A dial wrench suits that recheck, because the crew sees the value rather than just a click. Then the planner records each reading on the liner map.
- Shell liner bolts, where the liner supplier gives a torque.
- Mill gear guard and pinion housing bolts.
- Flotation cell drive and mechanism bolts.
- Slurry pump and thickener drive base bolts.
TEC803 data from the U.S./metric table
| Item | TEC803 (Snap-on CAT1500i p.335) |
|---|---|
| Square drive | 1 in |
| Metric range / steps | 110 kg·m / 2 kg·m |
| US range / steps | 800 ft-lb / 25 ft-lb |
| Length | 66-13/16 in |
| Width / head depth | 3-9/16 in / 2-1/32 in |
| Included | 92TQPA 4 ft tubular extension handle, packed separately |
The row belongs to Snap-on’s Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy chart, and it lists no storage case for this size. In addition, the same row names the TEC803FU follow-up and TEC803L signal models.
Using the 4-foot extension
At 800 ft-lb, a short lever asks too much of one person. So Snap-on packs the 92TQPA tube with this model to give the fitter more reach. Check how it fits before the reline starts, and keep two people on each pull inside the mill shell. One holds the wrench square to the bolt, while the other reads the dial.
Inside the mill with the Snap-on TEC803 Torqometer
Lock out the drive and block the shell before anyone climbs in. Also, keep slurry and grit off the TEC803 dial guard, because fine ore dust scratches glass. Snap-on warns against using the wrench to break fasteners loose. Therefore, knock out old liner bolts with the proper tools, and use the Snap-on TEC803 Torqometer only to tighten and check. Finally, send it for periodic recalibration, as Snap-on advises.
Getting a TEC803 before the next reline

Mill crew questions on the TEC803
Is a long handle part of the TEC803 package?
Snap-on’s row says the TEC803 includes a separately packed 92TQPA 4-foot tubular extension handle. Lost in HCM can confirm the contents of your unit.
Our liner sheet quotes N·m. Can the TEC803 still work?
It can, once each value goes through a unit conversion. The 110 kg·m mark equals roughly 1,079 N·m, so the crew should translate each value onto the kg·m scale first.
Which liner bolts sit below the useful band?
Since Snap-on rates accuracy from 20% of full scale upward, anything under about 22 kg·m or 160 ft-lb on the TEC803 belongs on a smaller wrench.
