Description

Snack and beverage plants in Binh Duong run form-fill-seal machines and cappers built in Japan and Taiwan. Their manuals tend to list bolt values in kgf·cm, while spare parts from the US quote inch-pounds. The Snap-on TEC50A Torqometer reads both on one face. With a 3/8 inch drive and a 12-1/2 inch body, it reaches inside an open machine guard.

Change-over work on packaging lines

Product changes mean new forming tubes, sealing jaws and star wheels, often several times a shift. Each part bolts on to a value, so a loose jaw means bad seals. Typical TEC50A jobs include:

  • Sealing jaw and heater block bolts on form-fill-seal machines.
  • Star wheel, guide rail and capper head bolts on bottling lines.
  • Conveyor motor bolts as well as gearbox mounts.
  • Forming collar and tube clamp bolts after a size change.

Food zones may require tools that stay clean and dry. So follow your hygiene plan for any tool that enters the zone.

TEC50A against TER50A

Both wrenches share a 3/8 inch drive, a 12-1/2 inch length and a 600 in-lb scale. However, the metric side differs. The Snap-on TEC50A Torqometer reads 700 kg·cm in 20 kg·cm steps, while the TER50A reads 60 N·m. In addition, Snap-on files the TEC50A under Standard 2% accuracy and the TER50A under Precise 1%. So choose by the unit on your drawings and the grade your quality plan asks for.

Specifications of the Snap-on TEC50A Torqometer

  • Square drive size: 3/8 inch.
  • Metric scale: 700 kg·cm in 20 kg·cm steps.
  • Inch-pound side: 600 in-lb, marked every 20 in-lb.
  • Size: 12-1/2 in long, 2-11/16 in wide, 1-1/4 in head depth without the drive.
  • Case: PB9.

These values appear in the Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy table on page 335 of Snap-on CAT1500i. Snap-on pairs it there with the TEC50FUA follow-up and the TEC50LA signal model.

The useful band on the Snap-on TEC50A Torqometer

Snap-on’s UK torque brochure puts the Standard grade within 2% of reading from 20% of full scale to full scale, clockwise and counterclockwise. Thus the TEC50A works best from 140 kg·cm, or 120 in-lb, up to full scale. For lighter screws on sensors and covers, a TEC12A or TEC6A reads more clearly.

Keeping it fit for the next change-over

Wipe off grease and product dust after each change, then store the TEC50A in its PB9 case outside the food zone. Also never pull past full scale or use it to free a stuck bolt, as Snap-on warns. Finally, book a recalibration on a fixed cycle, which Snap-on calls necessary to maintain accuracy.

Packaging line FAQ

Can the TEC50A work on 1/2 inch sockets?

Not directly. Snap-on offers the TEC51 with the same scales on a 1/2 inch drive and a 15 inch body.

How do I turn kg·cm into N·m?

Use a factor of about 0.098. So 700 kg·cm comes to roughly 68.6 N·m.

Which TEC50 model flashes at the target?

The TEC50LA does. Its built-in light flashes when you reach the targeted torque.
