Description

Scrap yards and steel recyclers in Vietnam feed old cars, appliances and offcuts into large hammer shredders. Those machines punish their own bolts with shock, heat and constant vibration. During a rebuild, the maintenance crew must bring heavy frame and drive joints back to spec. The Snap-on TEC3005L torque wrench reads to 3,000 ft-lb and 400 kg·m, and a lamp flashes at the target.

Shredder rebuilds with the Snap-on TEC3005L torque wrench

A shredder rebuild often covers the rotor bearing housings, the drive motor base and the coupling guard frame. The housing side liners and grate frames also need attention after wear parts change. For each joint with a torque value, the fitter pulls the TEC3005L until the lamp flashes. Then the reading goes into the rebuild record before the machine restarts.

Snap-on prints this row in the Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy table of catalog CAT1500i. That table notes that its wrenches ship without a certificate of calibration. Per the catalog, a C suffix orders the certified model. Since the TEC3005L has no C, plan an outside check on arrival.

A 140 inch lever in a scrap yard

A wrench this long needs space and a plan. First, clear the swing path around the shredder housing. Then work in pairs, with one person pulling and the other steadying the head. Because the lamp marks the target, the puller can keep both hands and eyes on a smooth motion.

Range limits of the Snap-on TEC3005L torque wrench

Lost in HCM lists this head under Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy. That Snap-on grade promises 2% of reading between 20% and 100% of full scale. So on the TEC3005L, the band starts at 600 ft-lb, or 80 kg·m. Lighter guard and chute bolts therefore need a smaller wrench from the same family.

Grit, oil and storage

Shredder halls fill with metal dust, oil mist and flying fines. Therefore cover the dial during nearby grinding, and wipe the TEC3005L after each shift. Also store it flat on a rack, out of the forklift lane. Never use it to break seized bolts loose, and book periodic recalibration with an outside lab.

Recycling plant FAQ

Does an extension handle come with the TEC3005L?

The combination table shows no handle note for this row. Ask Lost in HCM what ships in the crate before you plan the job.

What is 400 kg·m in N·m?

About 3,920 N·m. The TEC3005L shows kg·m and ft-lb, so convert any N·m value from a manual first.

Can the TEC3005L tighten shredder hammer pins?

Only where the shredder maker gives a torque value in its range. Many pin and liner joints use other methods, so follow the manual.
