Description
Ship repair yards in Vung Tau and Saigon dock vessels for rudder and steering gear overhauls. Those jobs bring heavy flange and tiller fixings that need a known torque. The Snap-on TEC1503L Torqometer reads them on two scales, foot-pounds and kilogram-meters. In addition, a built-in lamp flashes at the target, so the fitter can watch the joint instead of the needle.

Rudder work in dim spaces
A steering gear flat sits low in the stern, and the light there is often poor. Also, the rudder trunk is cramped, so a fitter may brace against a frame while he pulls. As a result, the dial is hard to read at the key moment. The TEC1503L answers with a signal design instead. According to Snap-on, its light flashes when the joint hits the targeted torque. Then the needle still shows the value for the yard record.
TEC1503L row in catalog CAT1500i
| Item | TEC1503L (CAT1500i p.335) |
|---|---|
| Square drive | 1 in |
| Metric range / steps | 200 kg·m / 5 kg·m |
| U.S. range / steps | 1,500 ft-lb / 25 ft-lb |
| Length | 80 in |
| Width / head depth | 4-13/32 in / 2-1/8 in |
| Storage case | None listed |
Snap-on prints this row in its Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy table. The two scales are not exact twins, since 200 kg·m is about 1,447 ft-lb. So read each value on its own scale. Per the catalog, a C at the end of the stock number orders the certificate of calibration version, TEC1503LC.
Steering gear joints for the Snap-on TEC1503L Torqometer
- Rudder coupling flange bolts, where the drawing gives a value in range.
- Ram and tiller fixings on hydraulic steering gear.
- Foundation bolts on steering gear seats.
- Carrier bearing and stock cap fixings.
However, many rudder joints use hydraulic nuts or fitted bolts with their own method. Thus follow the class rules and the yard procedure first. Then use the Snap-on TEC1503L Torqometer only where the plan gives a torque value.
Where the 2% band starts
Lost in HCM files the TEC1503L under Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy. Snap-on defines Standard as within 2% of reading from 20% of full scale to full scale, in both directions. On this dial, that band opens at 300 ft-lb or 40 kg·m. For N·m sheets, 1,500 ft-lb works out to roughly 2,034 N·m.
Moving an 80-inch wrench around a dock
Because it is 80 inches long, the TEC1503L is often a two-person carry. Also, Snap-on lists no storage case for this row, so plan a padded crate or a wall rack. Then keep it inside Snap-on’s 0 to 100 °F range, and never use it to break fasteners loose. Finally, book periodic recalibration with an outside lab, because Snap-on says the dial needs it to stay accurate.

Ship repair FAQ for the TEC1503L
Does the TEC1503L ship with an extension handle?
Snap-on’s footnote for this row lists a separately packed 93TQPA 5′ tubular extension handle. So confirm the box contents with Lost in HCM.
Can I read N·m on the TEC1503L?
No. The dial shows ft-lb and kg·m. However, you can multiply kg·m by about 9.81 to get N·m.
Is there a calibration certificate?
The TEC1503L name lists none. The catalog’s C suffix version, TEC1503LC, adds a certificate of calibration.
