Description

Car dealers and fleet garages in Vietnam service models from Japan, Korea, Europe and the US. Their manuals quote torque in N·m, kgf·m or ft-lb, depending on the maker and the year. The Snap-on TEC100 dial wrench helps here, because its Basic dial carries both ft-lb and kg·m scales on a 1/2-inch drive. So a technician can match most chassis specs without a chart.

Chassis joints for the TEC100

A 100 ft-lb scale covers a large share of passenger car chassis work, such as:

  • Brake caliper bracket and carrier bolts.
  • Control arm, tie rod and stabilizer link nuts.
  • Wheel nuts on many small and mid-size cars.
  • Engine and gearbox mount bolts.

Check each value in the service manual, because specs vary by model and year.

  • Drive: 1/2-inch square.
  • US scale: up to 100 ft-lb in 2 ft-lb steps.
  • Metric scale: up to 14 kg·m in 0.5 kg·m steps.
  • Length: 16 in, close to 406 mm.
  • Width 2-3/4 inches, head depth 1-3/8 inches.
  • Storage case: PBR5.

Also, these values match the TEC100 row in the Combination US/Metric table of Snap-on’s CAT1500i catalog.

Turning N·m specs into dial readings

However, many newer manuals use N·m only. In that case, divide the N·m value by 9.81 to get kg·m, then read the metric scale. For example, 108 N·m comes to about 11 kg·m. Alternatively, divide by 1.356 and look for about 80 ft-lb on the US side.

Accuracy band and nearby sizes

Snap-on’s brochure rates the Standard grade at within 2% of reading from 20% of full scale to full scale. On the TEC100, that means from about 20 ft-lb or 2.8 kg·m upward. For heavier truck work, the same catalog table also lists the TEC175 and TEC250. For lighter engine bolts, the TEC51 reads to 600 in-lb.

Care in a busy service bay

Brake fluid and grease also attack grips and dial glass. So wipe the TEC100 clean after each car and keep it in its PBR5 case. Do not drop it on the floor, and never use it to crack loose a wheel nut. In addition, check the zero before each shift. Snap-on calls for periodic recalibration, so send it to an outside lab on a regular schedule.

Questions from the service bay

Is the TEC100 good for wheel nuts?

For many cars, yes, as long as the spec stays under 100 ft-lb or 14 kg·m. Larger SUVs and trucks may need a bigger size.

Does the TEC100 click?

No. It is a dial wrench with one needle. You watch the needle and stop at the value.
