Description

Lost in HCM lists this heavy dial as “U.S. Basic – TE3005”, with no chart in the title. That makes the Snap-on TE3005 Torqometer the plain code for 3,000 ft-lb work on a 1-1/2 inch drive. If your project wants documents in the box, compare the TE3005C torque wrench with Chart.

Why the TE3005 has a C twin

Snap-on’s US Reading table states that its listed wrenches come without a certificate of calibration. A C on the end of the code, it adds, orders the certificate models. Hence the TE3005 and the TE3005C share one row, one dial and one drive. Lost in HCM, meanwhile, words its C listing as “with Chart” and leaves the contents open.

Pick the code by your verification route

A heavy dial costs real money, so the paperwork choice matters. Choose the TE3005 when your plant or a contract lab owns a bench that reaches 3,000 ft-lb, because that lab will test the tool anyway. On the other hand, a project QA plan may bar any gauge without a record on day one. In that case, or when a lab slot lies weeks away, the TE3005C avoids a delay.

Hydropower overhaul work

Hydropower plants in the north and central highlands open their units for planned overhauls. Turbine cover, guide vane and bearing bracket bolts can reach into this range. Even so, many large joints on those machines call for hydraulic tensioners. So follow the turbine maker’s method, and keep the Snap-on TE3005 Torqometer for joints with a printed torque value.

Snap-on TE3005 Torqometer specs from CAT1500i

  • Square drive of 1-1/2 in, with a 3,000 ft-lb scale in 50 ft-lb steps.
  • Width of 5-1/2 in and head depth of 2-13/16 in.
  • Includes the 94TQPA 10 ft extension handle, per the catalog note.
  • One needle, as a Basic model, to show the torque you reach.

The UK brochure puts Torqometer accuracy at 2% of reading from 20% of full scale. Therefore the TE3005 band starts at 600 ft-lb and tops out at 3,000 ft-lb, about 4,070 N·m.

Two-person pulls with the TE3005

With the long handle fitted, one person pulls while a second steadies the head and calls the reading. Also clear the swing path first, because penstock galleries and pits leave little room. Snap-on warns never to exceed rated torque or to free stuck nuts with a Torqometer. Then plan periodic recalibration, as Snap-on advises.
