Description

Steel pipe and tube mills turn coil into welded pipe for water, gas and building work. Their forming stands, weld boxes, sizing stands and flying saws run hot, loud and fast. During a roll change, crews reset many large bolts against a tight restart clock. The Snap-on TE2005L Torqometer covers the heaviest of them, and a lamp flashes when the pull reaches the target.

Mill stands that call for the Snap-on TE2005L Torqometer

  • Stand housing and base frame bolts on forming and sizing stands.
  • Gearbox and drive spindle mount bolts.
  • Flying saw carriage and base bolts after a blade drive overhaul.
  • Hydrotester head frame bolts where the maker gives a torque value.

Mill builders still publish the bolt tables, and some roll shafts use hydraulic nuts. So read the manual first, then use the TE2005L wherever a ft-lb value appears.

The TE2005L in Snap-on’s US table

Item TE2005L (CAT1500i p.333)
Square drive 1-1/2 in
Range 2,000 ft-lb
Increments 25 ft-lb
Length 80 in
Head depth 2-3/8 in
Extension handle 93TQPA 5 ft tubular, packed separately

These figures come from the US Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy table in Snap-on catalog CAT1500i. The same row also lists a basic TE2005 and a follow-up TE2005FU. This plain TE2005L names no certificate. Even so, the catalog says a C suffix on the stock number orders a certificate of calibration model.

A lamp over mill noise

Pipe mills ring with saw cuts, roll noise and coolant spray. Therefore a fitter can lose track of a needle during a long, heavy pull. Snap-on’s Signal models solve that with a built-in light that flashes at the targeted torque. The fitter stops on the flash, then reads the TE2005L dial and logs the value for the roll change.

Working range of the TE2005L

Lost in HCM files this wrench under US Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy. Snap-on’s Standard label promises 2% of reading across the top four fifths of the scale. For the TE2005L, the band thus opens at 400 ft-lb. In addition, 2,000 ft-lb is about 2,710 N·m, which helps when a European mill manual lists metric values.

Care during a Snap-on TE2005L Torqometer roll change

First, clear a path for the 80 inch body and its 5 foot handle. Then work in pairs, because one person must keep the head square. Also wipe off coolant and scale dust after each job, and keep the dial away from hot weld zones. Snap-on gives the dial an operating range of 0 to 100 °F. Above all, never free a seized bolt with the TE2005L.

Pipe mill FAQ for the TE2005L

Can the TE2005L read N·m?

No. It reads ft-lb only, so divide an N·m spec by about 1.356 before you set the target.

Why is the width missing from the table?

Two Snap-on tables print different widths for this size, so we left it out. Ask Lost in HCM to confirm it.

Is there a two-needle model at this size?

Yes. The TE2005FU follow-up model shares the same catalog row.
