Description
Some service manuals stop giving a single torque value. Instead, they ask for a snug torque and then a set turn, such as 90 degrees. The Snap-on TA358 torque angle gauge measures that turn. It has a 3/8″ square drive, so it sits between a 3/8″ wrench or ratchet and the socket.

Why engine makers specify angle
Torque alone is an indirect way to load a bolt. Much of the effort goes into thread and head friction, and friction changes with oil, plating and dirt. Angle, on the other hand, ties straight to how far the bolt stretches. So a torque-plus-angle spec gives a more even clamp load across a cylinder head or a rod cap. Snap-on describes the TA358 as a tool that determines angle-controlled torque tightening.
How to use the Snap-on TA358 torque angle gauge
- First, tighten every bolt to the snug torque with a torque wrench.
- Next, fit the TA358 between the drive tool and the socket.
- Then hold the gauge body still and set the dial to zero.
- Finally, turn the handle until the dial shows the angle in the manual.
Work in the sequence the manual gives, because head bolts often need a set pattern. Also finish each bolt in one smooth pull rather than in short jerks.
Jobs that suit the TA358
Snap-on lists automotive, diesel and industrial equipment as uses for this model. In addition, it names head bolts and rod bolts on motorcycles. In a Vietnamese plant, that covers the following work:
- Small engine rebuilds on forklifts, generators and pumps.
- Cylinder head and rod cap work in fleet workshops.
- Motorcycle engine assembly and repair.
- Gearbox and housing bolts that carry an angle step.
3/8 inch or 1/2 inch?
The TA358 suits the lighter end, where a 3/8″ drive is the natural fit. For larger diesel head bolts, its sibling TA360 brings a 1/2″ drive. Pick the gauge that matches the wrench your technicians already use for the snug step.
Care tips
Keep the Snap-on TA358 torque angle gauge dry and store it away from heavy tools that could dent the dial. Also never use it to break bolts loose, since Snap-on warns against that with torque tools.

TA358 angle gauge questions
Does the TA358 replace a torque wrench?
No. You still set the snug torque with a torque wrench. The TA358 then measures the extra turn in degrees.
What drive size does it take?
It has a 3/8″ square drive, so it pairs with 3/8″ drive tools and sockets.
Is it only for car engines?
No. Snap-on lists automotive, diesel and industrial equipment, plus motorcycle head and rod bolts.
