Description
Large hydraulic lines carry big swivel nuts, and a socket cannot pass the tube to reach them. The Snap-on RTWH96YSL flare nut head handles that job at 1-1/2 in. Its slotted 12-point ring passes over the line and then ratchets on the nut. It mounts on Y-shank (0.560 in) torque bodies.

Where the RTWH96YSL sits in the Y range
CAT1500i’s Y ratchet column ends at 1-5/8 in. Above 1-1/4 in, the sizes step by 1/8 in. So the RTWH88YSL covers 1-3/8 in, the RTWH96YSL covers 1-1/2 in, and the RTWH104YSL closes the table. No J ratchet comes near this size, because the J column stops at 7/8 in.
Y bodies for the Snap-on RTWH96YSL flare nut head
- QC3P200 preset, 40-200 ft-lb: suits one value repeated across many fittings.
- QD3IN200B adjustable, 40-200 N·m: reads in the units most metric drawings use.
- CTECH2Y100A ControlTech, 5-100 ft-lb: stores a head-length factor and logs each reading.
A big nut often needs a high value, so check that the body’s top end covers your joint. However, CAT1500i prints no limit for ratcheting heads. Lost in HCM therefore confirms what the RTWH96YSL accepts before you set it.
Reach and setting with the RTWH96YSL
RTWHY heads place the fastener 4.43 in from the retaining pin. Fixed QYRX flare heads on the same shank sit at 3.00 in. As a result, the RTWH96YSL adds 1.43 in of lever, and a click body set from its scale overshoots at the nut. So use the ControlTech head-length factor, or get Snap-on’s setting method through Lost in HCM.
Y shank or X shank at 1-1/2 in
Lost in HCM also lists an RTWH96X for X-shank (0.735 in) bodies. However, CAT1500i shows only the RTWH96YSL at this size. So start from the body you already own. If that body is an X wrench, ask the team to confirm the X part with Snap-on first.
Heavy equipment lines and the Snap-on RTWH96YSL flare nut head
Excavators, presses and power units often run 1 in tube with large swivel nuts. On many 37-degree JIC ends, a -16 nut has a 1-1/2 in hex. Even so, makers vary, so measure the flats before you order. Also note that 1-1/2 in equals 38.1 mm, so keep this inch ring for inch hardware.
