Description

Heavy machinery sometimes uses a 29 mm hex on bolts that need high torque and a firm grip. The Snap-on QZXM29ADP box end head puts a 12-point ring on the largest Snap-on shank, the Z. Its dual pins also match the dual-pin note in Snap-on’s Z body table.

Dimensions of the QZXM29ADP

  • Opening: 29 mm, 12-point box end.
  • Shank: Z (0.990 in), dual pins (DP suffix).
  • O.D.: 42 mm.
  • Head depth: 18 mm.
  • Fastener center to retaining pin: 5.75 in (QZXM series).

Snap-on’s UK brochure lists the 29 mm Z ring as QZXM29A, with a higher limit than the source listing gives for this dual-pin part. Because the figures conflict, we leave the QZXM29ADP rating out. Lost in HCM confirms it with each quote.

Why a ring on a Z body

High torque on a mid-size hex is where open jaws struggle. An open jaw loads two flats, so it can spread under a big pull. The QZXM29ADP spreads the load over all corners instead. Therefore it suits final torque on frame bolts, coupling bolts and mounting bolts with open space above the head.

Fitting the Snap-on QZXM29ADP box end head to a Z body

CAT1500i lists the QD4IN800A as its Z dual-range body, reading 129 to 572 ft-lb. That table carries a note for dual-pin heads only, and the DP suffix marks this head as dual-pin. The QZXM29ADP also keeps the 5.75 in Z spacing, so Snap-on says the QD body needs no adjustment calculation. However, set no value until Lost in HCM confirms the head limit.

Z ring or X ring at 29 mm?

The 29 mm X ring, the QXXM29A, shares this head’s 42 mm width and 18 mm depth. So the choice comes down to the body and the torque spec, not clearance. An X body is shorter and lighter to swing. A Z body, by contrast, covers the heaviest joints. Pick the QZXM29ADP when your station already runs a dual-pin Z body.

Working space for a Z ring

The QZXM29ADP ring itself is compact, yet the Z body measures 41-1/2 in. Therefore plan the pull path before you start. Also make sure the ring drops fully over the hex, because a half-seated ring can slip off under load.

QZXM29ADP care

Check both pins for wear, since loose pins let the head tilt. Then clean the 12-point bore. Finally, store the head in a fitted drawer, so the pins stay protected.

QZXM29ADP questions

Is the QZXM29ADP the same as the QZXM29A?

Not exactly. The DP suffix marks a dual-pin version, while the UK brochure lists the QZXM29A.

How much room does the QZXM29ADP ring need?

It measures 42 mm across and 18 mm deep, the same as the X version at 29 mm.

Can the QZXM29ADP pass over a stud?

Only if the stud is short enough for the ring to slide over it. Otherwise, use an open-end head.
