Description

Plants that run German or older Japanese machines see a lot of 17 mm hex heads, because DIN 933 and DIN 934 give M10 that size. The Snap-on QYXM17A box end head grips them with a closed 12-point ring on a Y-shank (0.560 in) body. Snap-on’s brochure rates this Y ring well above the J ring at 17 mm. So a high-strength M10 joint gets a firmer value on a wrench of 23 in or less.

J, Y or X at 17 mm

The UK torque brochure lists three 17 mm rings, one for each of the J, Y and X shanks. In fact, 17 mm is the first metric row with an X ring. All three share a 25 mm width and 11 mm depth. So the choice comes down to the body you own and the value you need. The Snap-on QYXM17A box end head covers the middle ground, and it sits 3.00 in from the pin.

Rating status of the Snap-on QYXM17A box end head

Snap-on’s brochure and the partner listing give different maximum working torques for this Y ring. Rather than pick one, we leave both off. Lost in HCM confirms the limit on the quote. Then keep every pull at or below that figure.

Pairing a Y body with the QYXM17A

  • QD3IN200B: dual scale, 40-200 N·m (37-140 ft-lb), 23 in long, 3.36 lb.
  • QC3P150: preset, 30-150 ft-lb, for one value per station.
  • CTECH2Y100A: electronic, 5-100 ft-lb, 17.2 in long, with a digital record.

For M10 values below 37 ft-lb, the CTECH2Y100A reads where the QD3IN200B cannot. Meanwhile, the QC3P200 also takes this head, but its scale runs to 200 ft-lb.

Side room and depth for the QYXM17A

A 25 mm outside diameter means the ring wants roughly 12.5 mm between the bolt center and any wall. The ring also stands just 11 mm tall, so it slips under guards and onto flange bolts close to a web. However, check that the 23 in tube can swing freely, because the body often needs more room than the ring.

DIN M10 questions on the QYXM17A

Does the QYXM17A suit ISO 4032 M10 nuts?

No. ISO M10 nuts use a 16 mm hex, so they need a 16 mm ring.

Can a QD3IN200B set 30 ft-lb on the QYXM17A?

No. The QD3IN200B scale begins at 37 ft-lb. For 30 ft-lb, use the CTECH2Y100A or the QC3P150 preset.

Does the QYXM17A come in an X-shank version?

Snap-on lists an X ring at 17 mm, the QXXM17A. It locks into X bodies only.
