Description

Large tube nuts sit on thick lines, and those lines rarely leave much room to swing a wrench. The Snap-on QYRX48A flare nut head takes a 1-1/2 in nut with a 12-point opening, so you can re-seat it every 30 degrees. It then pins onto any Y-shank interchangeable torque body.

Snap-on QYRX48A flare nut head at a glance

  • Nut size: 1-1/2 in, 12-point opening.
  • Shank: Y, 0.560 in diameter.
  • Maximum recommended torque: 160 ft-lb, or about 217 N·m.
  • Fastener center to retaining pin: 3.00 in, as for the whole QYRX series.

Neighbors in the same Snap-on table include the 1-3/8 in QYRX44A and the 1-5/8 in QYRX52A. Both carry the same 160 ft-lb ceiling.

Why the slot matters on big fittings

A flare nut head wraps around most of the nut, yet a narrow gap lets it slip over the tube. As a result, you can torque a fitting without taking the line apart. A full box head cannot do that, while an open-end head grips only two flats. Here, the 12-point form also gives more starting positions in a cramped bay.

Match the body to the 160 ft-lb ceiling

The head sets the limit, so pick a body that works at or below 160 ft-lb. On SMK Vietnam, the dual-scale QD3IN200B tops out at 140 ft-lb on its ft-lb scale. The preset QC3P150 stops at 150 ft-lb, so it fits as well. With a body that reaches higher, such as the QC3P200, cap the setting at 160 ft-lb.

QYRX heads share the 3.00 in spacing of Snap-on’s standard Y heads. For that reason, the dual-range QD bodies read true with no length math. ControlTech electronic bodies, such as the CTECH2Y100A, also store a factor for head length.

Where a 1-1/2 in head earns its place

  • Large hydraulic hose and tube fittings on presses, cranes and excavators.
  • Process and cooling lines on compressors and chillers.
  • Fuel and oil manifolds on big diesel gensets and marine engines.

Looking after the QYRX48A

Wipe off hydraulic oil after each job, since a slick jaw can slip under load. Next, check the slot edges for spread, because an open jaw no longer grips evenly. Then store the head with its pin clean and free of grit. Finally, use it for final tightening only, never to free a seized nut.

QYRX48A questions

Does the QYRX48A fit a J-shank wrench?

No. It needs a Y-shank body with a 0.560 in shank.

What torque limit applies?

Snap-on gives 160 ft-lb as the maximum recommended torque for this head.

Why choose 12-point over 6-point?

A 12-point opening gives twice as many seating positions. That helps when the swing arc is short.
