Description

Thirty millimeters is the hex many M20 nuts use, and those joints turn up on pump bases, gearbox feet and structural brackets. The Snap-on QYOM30A open end head fits that hex from the side. So a Y-shank torque body can tighten it even when a pipe or a stud blocks a socket.

QYOM30A data in brief

  • Opening: 30 mm, open end.
  • Shank: Y (0.560 in).
  • Maximum recommended working torque: 160 ft-lb (about 217 N·m).
  • Outside diameter: 61 mm; head depth: 13 mm.
  • Fastener center to retaining pin: 3.00 in, the QYOM series value.

Y bodies and the 160 ft-lb ceiling

Snap-on lists several Y-shank bodies in CAT1500i. For example, the QD3IN200B dual-range body reads 40 to 200 N·m, which is 37 to 140 ft-lb. In that case, the body sets the limit, not the QYOM30A. Preset QC3P150 and QC3P200 bodies also take Y heads. However, the QC3P200 reaches 200 ft-lb, so keep any preset at or below 160 ft-lb with this head.

Is a 30 mm job right for the Snap-on QYOM30A open end head?

Check the spec against each shank at 30 mm. Snap-on rates the J version (QJOM30) at 60 ft-lb, while the X version reaches 240 ft-lb and the dual-pin Z version 413 ft-lb. So the QYOM30A covers the middle band. If your joint sits between 60 and 160 ft-lb, it is the lightest head that works. Above 160 ft-lb, step to an X or Z body instead of pushing this head.

Clearance trade-offs at 30 mm

An open jaw needs room beside the nut, not above it. At 61 mm across, the QYOM30A needs a clear arc around the hex, and its 13 mm depth must fit under any overhang. By contrast, a 12-point ring head must drop over the nut but grips every corner. Therefore choose the open end when a tube or rod passes through the joint.

QYOM30A care routine

Inspect the jaw faces for burrs after heavy use. Then wipe the shank and lock pin, because grit there tilts the Snap-on QYOM30A open end head in the body. Also return the body for periodic recalibration, as Snap-on advises.

QYOM30A FAQ

Which nuts use a 30 mm hex?

Many M20 nuts and bolts use 30 mm. Still, measure the flats, because some standards differ.

Can I set 180 ft-lb with the QYOM30A?

No. Snap-on rates it at 160 ft-lb, so a higher target needs an X or Z head.

Does the 3.00 in spacing need a correction?

Not on Snap-on’s QD dual-range bodies, which the catalog says need no adjustment calculation for these heads. For any other body, follow its maker’s instructions.
