Description
X-shank bodies sit at the heavy end of Snap-on’s interchangeable system, yet plenty of their work still runs on 1/2 in sockets. The Snap-on QXD16A ratcheting head covers that need. It gives an X-shank (0.735 in) wrench a 1/2 in square drive with a ratchet, so you can swing back without lifting the socket.

QXD16A data from CAT1500i
| Square drive | 1/2 in, ratcheting |
|---|---|
| Shank | X (0.735 in) |
| Head O.D. | 1-5/8 in |
| Head depth | 3/4 in |
| Ratchet service kit | RKRS80A |
| Fastener center to retaining pin | 4.50 in (QXD series) |
Same drive, three shanks
Snap-on makes a 1/2 in ratcheting head for the J, Y and X shanks. The QJD16A, QYD16A and QXD16A share the same 1-5/8 in O.D. and 3/4 in depth. However, the pin distance grows with the shank: 2.50 in on QJD, 3.00 in on QYD and 4.50 in on QXD. So the QXD16A only makes sense once your body uses the X shank. Snap-on also lists the QXD12A-80 for 3/8 in and the QXD24A for 3/4 in on the same shank.
X-shank bodies for the Snap-on QXD16A ratcheting head
- QC4P300 preset: 60 to 300 ft-lb (82 to 400 N·m), for repeat assembly values.
- QD3IN350A dual-range: 70 to 350 N·m.
- ControlTech CTECH3X250A: 12.5 to 250 ft-lb, electronic.
Snap-on states that its QD heads share a consistent pin-to-fastener size, so no adjustment math applies. The CTECH3X250A also stores a calibration factor for head length. Even so, confirm your body pairing with Lost in HCM before ordering.
Torque limit for the QXD16A
CAT1500i prints no working torque for this square drive head. The partner listing gives 240 ft-lb, while Snap-on’s UK brochure shows a different value. Because the sources disagree, we leave the rating out. Ask Lost in HCM for the current Snap-on figure, and set your wrench below it.
Rebuilding the ratchet with RKRS80A
Ratchets wear with use, so the QXD16A has its own service kit, the RKRS80A. Snap-on lists the same kit for the QJD16SL and QYD16SL heads. Therefore, a site that runs several 1/2 in heads can stock one kit type. Also keep the drive clean and never use the head to break bolts loose.
