Description

Small M5 bolts hold covers, terminal blocks and sensor brackets all over a factory, and their hex measures 8 mm. However, those joints need control at low values, where a large wrench reads poorly. The Snap-on QJXM8A box end head brings a closed 8 mm, 12-point ring to a J-shank body. Its ring is only 13 mm across, so it slips between close parts.

Snap-on QJXM8A box end head ratings

  • Ring: 8 mm opening, 12 points, closed.
  • Shank: J (0.425 in).
  • Head limit: 22 ft-lb (about 30 N·m).
  • Outside diameter: 13 mm. Head depth: 6 mm.
  • Pin to fastener center: 2.50 in (QJXM series).

Here the brochure and the partner listing agree on the rating, because 265 in-lb works out to 22 ft-lb. Still, treat that figure as a ceiling for the QJXM8A, not as a target for the joint.

Small J bodies for the Snap-on QJXM8A box end head

The head limit sits below the top of several J bodies, so set the cap first. Snap-on’s CAT1500i lists these J options:

  • QC1I200 adjustable, 40-200 in-lb, 9-3/8 in long. So its whole scale stays under the 265 in-lb limit.
  • QC1P100 preset, 15-100 in-lb, for one small fixed value.
  • CTECH1J240A ControlTech, 12-240 in-lb (1-20 ft-lb), with a readout and data memory.
  • QD2IN50A dual scale, 9.2-35.0 ft-lb. With this ring, however, stop at 22 ft-lb.

QC accuracy, per CAT1500i, holds within 4% clockwise between 20% and 100% of full scale. For the QC1I200, that window begins at exactly 40 in-lb, the bottom of its scale. So the QJXM8A and that body make a tidy pair for small M5 work.

Sizing the hex before you order

ISO 4032 and ISO 4017 give M5 hardware an 8 mm hex. However, small hexes from 7 to 9 mm look alike at arm’s length. Snap-on lists the QJXM7A and the QJXM9A on either side, each with its own rating. So measure the flats with a caliper, and then choose the ring. Also note that the Snap-on QJXM8A box end head is the only 8 mm ring in the brochure, since the Y rings start at 14 mm.

Care for a small ring

An 8 mm ring has thin walls, so check it for spread or cracks before each shift. Also blow dust out of the points, because grit stops the ring from seating. Then store the QJXM8A in a fitted tray, away from heavy tools that could knock it.

Quoting the QJXM8A through Lost in HCM

QJXM8A buyer checks

How much torque can the 8 mm J ring take?

22 ft-lb, about 30 N·m. Snap-on’s UK brochure lists the same limit as 265 in-lb.

Does an 8 mm ring fit M5 screws?

Yes, for ISO hex heads and nuts. Socket-head screws need a hex bit instead.

Is there a Y-shank 8 mm ring?

No. In the brochure, the 8 mm size appears only on the J shank.
