Description

An 8 mm hex usually means an M5 nut, and M5 joints strip fast when someone guesses the torque. The Snap-on QJOM8A open end head puts a measured pull on those small nuts from the side. It uses the J shank (0.425 in), so it fits Snap-on’s lightest interchangeable bodies.

Only two bodies suit the QJOM8A

The UK torque brochure marks this head with an asterisk. Its footnote limits the 6, 7 and 8 mm jaws to the QC1P100 and QC1I200 bodies. So do not plan to fit it on a larger J wrench, even though the shank would slide in.

J body Type and scale Use with the QJOM8A
QC1P100 Preset, 15-100 in-lb, 8 in long The whole scale
QC1I200 Adjustable, 40-200 in-lb, 9-3/8 in long 40 to 120 in-lb only

In other words, the preset body can never pass the head limit. The adjustable body, however, reads higher, so stop at 120 in-lb.

One limit, three units for the Snap-on QJOM8A open end head

CAT1500i lists 10 ft-lb for the 8 mm J jaw. The UK brochure prints 120 in-lb, which is the same value. That works out to about 13.6 N·m. Because small specs appear in N·m or in-lb on drawings, write all three units on the job card. Then no one has to convert on the line.

M5 jobs for the QJOM8A

ISO 4032 and DIN 934 both give the M5 nut an 8 mm hex. For example, M5 nuts hold sensor brackets, cable clamps and small guide rails on assembly cells. A jam nut on an M5 stop screw is a classic case, since the screw blocks a socket. With the QJOM8A on a QC1P100 preset, every station gets the same value. As a result, small brackets stay put after months of vibration.

Handling a small J jaw

An 8 mm jaw is thin, so it can mark soft brass or aluminum nuts. Seat the Snap-on QJOM8A open end head fully on the flats before you pull. Also pull slowly, because a light setting clicks after a short swing. Finally, keep it in a labeled slot, since the 7 mm and 9 mm heads look much the same.

Getting the Snap-on QJOM8A open end head with a small body

Lost in HCM supplies this head and prepares each quote, while SMK Vietnam lists it for them. Request a quote from Lost in HCM and say whether you own a QC1P100 or a QC1I200. If you have neither, ask for the body in the same quote. Other small jaws sit under torque wrench heads and adaptors, or you can contact SMK Vietnam.

Small-nut FAQ for the QJOM8A

Can I use the QJOM8A on a QC2I75 body?

Snap-on’s UK brochure says no. It ties the 8 mm head to the QC1P100 and QC1I200, so stay with those two bodies.

How does the 120 in-lb cap read on a metric drawing?

On a metric drawing it reads about 13.6 N·m. So if an 8 mm joint calls for more, ask Lost in HCM before you order.

Is there a 12-point ring for 8 mm as well?

Yes, the UK brochure lists the QJXM8A box end head at 8 mm. Choose it when you can reach over the nut, and keep the QJOM8A for side access.
