The Snap-on QJOM13A open end head puts a 13 mm jaw on a J-shank (0.425 in) torque body. Snap-on rates it at 41 ft-lb, which suits M8 nuts on lines, clamps and brackets that a ring cannot reach.

Description

M8 is one of the few thread sizes where ISO and DIN agree on the hex, since both use 13 mm. So a single jaw covers M8 nuts on European, Japanese and Korean machines alike. The Snap-on QJOM13A open end head is that jaw for a J-shank (0.425 in) torque body. Because it slides on from the side, it also reaches nuts threaded onto lines, rods and tube clamps.

What CAT1500i and the UK brochure say about the QJOM13A

Opening 13 mm, open jaw
Shank J (0.425 in)
Maximum recommended working torque 41 ft-lb, about 55.6 N·m
Outside diameter about 27 mm
Head depth about 6 mm
Pin to fastener center 2.50 in (QJOM series)

The CAT1500i industrial catalog prints 41 ft-lb for this jaw. Snap-on’s UK torque brochure gives 495 in-lb, which comes to the same 41 ft-lb. In addition, both books show the QJOM13A as the only 13 mm head in the metric open end table, since the Y column starts at 14 mm.

J bodies that cannot pass the QJOM13A limit

The safest pairing is a body whose full scale stays under the jaw rating. Then no setting can overload the Snap-on QJOM13A open end head.

  • QD2IN50A: 10-50 N·m, or 9.2-35.0 ft-lb, on a 14-1/2 in tube with metric and imperial scales.
  • QC1P300 preset: 60-300 in-lb, so it tops out near 25 ft-lb.
  • CTECH1J240A: an electronic body that reads 1.0-20.0 ft-lb.

On the other hand, the QC2P75, QC2I75 and QD2IN100A all climb past 70 ft-lb. They still work with this jaw, but only if you hold every setting at or below 41 ft-lb.

Side-entry M8 jobs for the Snap-on QJOM13A open end head

A ring head needs a clear path over the top of the nut. However, many M8 joints sit on a stud with a line, a cable or a bracket in the way. Think of tube clamp nuts, guard mounts behind pipework and jam nuts on threaded rods, for example. In those spots, the open jaw slips on sideways and still lets the wrench click at a set value.

Seating the 13 mm QJOM13A jaw on two flats

An open jaw grips only two flats, so seat it fully before each pull. Then keep the handle square to the jaw, because a tilted pull can spread or slip. Snap-on’s brochure also rules out using it to break a fastener loose. So free a stuck M8 nut with a plain spanner first. Finally, wipe the shank and the body socket before you push the QJOM13A home.

M8 jaw questions about the QJOM13A

Is the 13 mm QJOM13A jaw right for DIN as well as ISO M8 hardware?

Yes. ISO 4032 and DIN 934 both give M8 a 13 mm hex, so one jaw covers both.

Is there a Y-shank version of the 13 mm jaw?

No. Snap-on’s tables list only the J part at 13 mm. The Y column begins at 14 mm with the QYOM14A.

How many N·m does the QJOM13A take?

Its 41 ft-lb limit works out to about 55.6 N·m. So a QD2IN50A, which tops out at 50 N·m, can never pass it.
