Description

Small fasteners on electrical panels, sensor housings and light covers often call for 1/4 in drive sockets. The Snap-on QJD8SL-72 ratcheting head brings that drive to a J-shank torque wrench body. Its pin-to-fastener distance is longer than on Snap-on’s standard J heads, so it suits jobs where a little extra reach helps.

How the Snap-on QJD8SL-72 ratcheting head differs from the QJD8A-72

Both heads carry a 1/4 in ratcheting drive on a J shank. Both also share the same head size and service kit. The difference lies in length. Snap-on gives 2.50 in from pin to fastener for the QJD series, but 3.5 in for the QJD-SL series. So choose the QJD8A-72 when you want direct readings on a body set up for standard heads. Choose the QJD8SL-72 when the longer reach matters more.

Setting the body with a longer head

The extra length changes the lever geometry between your hand and the fastener. As a result, a setting that suits a 2.50 in head will not apply the same torque through this one. Snap-on’s catalog prints no correction for SL heads, so we do not offer one here. Instead, ask Lost in HCM for Snap-on’s guidance before you set the wrench. By contrast, Snap-on’s ControlTech electronic wrenches include a built-in calibration factor for different head lengths.

Picking a body and sockets

Pair the QJD8SL-72 with a J-shank body whose range fits your small fasteners. For example, Snap-on lists the QC1I200 at 40-200 in-lb and the QC1P60 preset body at 10-60 in-lb. Then use 1/4 in drive sockets or bit holders that seat fully on the square. Also keep extensions short, because every extra joint adds play.

Ratchet care for the QJD8SL-72

The RKRT72A kit services the ratchet in the Snap-on QJD8SL-72 ratcheting head. So if the pawl starts to slip or feel rough, you can rebuild it rather than buy a new head. Keep grit out of the mechanism, and wipe the square before you fit a socket.

Questions about the QJD8SL-72

What does the 3.5 in figure describe?

It is the distance from the retaining pin to the center of the fastener. Snap-on gives it for the whole QJD-SL series.

No. It has a J shank. In fact, Snap-on offers its 1/4 in ratcheting square drive heads in J only.

Not in the square drive table we checked, so we leave it out. Lost in HCM can confirm the rating with your quote.
