Description
Steel frame connections often use DIN 6914 high-strength bolts, and the M12 size in that standard has a 22 mm hex. The Snap-on IZ22IR14X18 insert ring fits that hex with a closed ring on a 14 x 18 mm IZO fitting. As a result, a heavy electronic body can torque those joints from above.
The Snap-on IZ22IR14X18 insert ring and the two fittings
Snap-on’s 9 x 12 mm rings stop at 19 mm. So every 22 mm IZO insert uses the larger 14 x 18 mm fitting. Two parts exist at that size: the closed IZ22IR14X18 and the open IZ22OE14X18. Around them, the 14 x 18 ring series steps from 19 mm to 22, 24 and 27 mm.
One body with a wide span
In CAT1500i, the CTECHBN340A is the ControlTech body with a 14 x 18 mm receiver. It reads 17.0 to 340.0 N·m and measures 607 mm without a head. Snap-on calibrates its wrenches from 20 to 100% of full scale. For this body, that lower point works out to 68 N·m. So the IZ22IR14X18 fits best on the firmer joints of a line. The ControlTech firmware also holds a built-in factor for each head length, so pick the right entry for the ring first.
When the closed IZ22IR14X18 beats the open jaw
A closed ring wraps the whole hex instead of two flats. Therefore, it spreads the load and lowers the risk of rounding a tight nut. However, it needs clear space above the fastener. Choose the IZ22OE14X18 when a pipe, hose or cable blocks the top. For open bolt heads and nuts, the ring is the safer grip.
Fitting the Snap-on IZ22IR14X18 insert ring
Slide the insert into the 14 x 18 mm receiver until the lock engages. Give it a firm pull to check that it holds. Then drop the ring fully over the hex and keep the body square to the bolt. Also note that a standard ISO 4017 M12 bolt uses 18 mm, not 22 mm, so check which bolt the drawing calls for. Snap-on tells users not to exceed rated capacity or break fasteners loose. So crack a seized nut with a plain wrench first.
