Description
A receiver that passes on a clean signal can still fail under stress. The Keysight M8040A BERT tests for exactly that. It generates patterns up to 64 Gbaud, then counts the errors your device makes. Lost in HCM lists it for rental and sale, so a lab can borrow it for a project or buy it.

Keysight M8040A BERT at a glance
| Maximum symbol rate | 64 Gbaud |
|---|---|
| Signaling | NRZ, PAM3 and PAM4 |
| Channels | 1 to 2 |
| Module functions | Pattern generator and error analyzer |
| Real-time PAM4 error detection | Up to 58 Gbaud |
| Form factor | Modular AXIe system with remote heads |
Installed modules, options and licenses can change what a given unit does. Therefore the serial-number configuration in the quote is the final reference.
Stress the link, then count what breaks
Real links are never clean, so the M8040A adds impairments on purpose. Its built-in jitter injection covers random, periodic, sinusoidal and bounded uncorrelated components. De-emphasis and analyzer equalization then help recreate a lossy channel. Clock recovery completes the receiver side. For PCI Express work, interactive link training and SKP ordered-set filtering keep the test moving.
Standards this BERT targets
- 400 and 800 Gigabit Ethernet and OIF CEI receiver tests.
- PCIe 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 compliance development.
- USB4, Thunderbolt and other high-speed serial validation.
- Optical transceiver, cable, backplane and semiconductor characterization.
Teams often combine two or three of these in one program. In that case, a rental covers the peak without a long-term purchase.
Configure the unit before you book
This instrument is a modular AXIe system with remote heads. So the chassis, the heads and the licensed functions all matter. Tell Lost in HCM the signaling format, the symbol rate and the standard you test against. Then they can check that the unit on offer covers your plan.

M8040A questions
Which signaling formats does it handle?
It handles NRZ, PAM3 and PAM4 signaling, at up to 64 Gbaud.
How many channels can I use?
The module functions cover one to two channels, depending on the configuration you rent or buy.
Does it need a separate chassis?
It is a modular AXIe system with remote heads. Ask Lost in HCM which chassis and heads come with the unit.
