Description

A laptop can become your spectrum analyzer. The Tektronix RSA607A spectrum analyzer is a compact USB unit: the RF hardware sits in the box, while SignalVu-PC runs on a computer you already own. It covers 9 kHz to 7.5 GHz, so it reaches from kilohertz-range noise to several gigahertz.

How the USB design works

The RSA607A belongs to the RSA600 series. It connects over USB 3.0 to an external computer, and that computer provides the display and the controls. Tektronix SignalVu-PC does the analysis. Installed options decide which advanced measurements you get.

The computer is not assumed to be part of the package. So check the software requirements, then pick a host that meets them.

Span, bandwidth and real-time

Two numbers describe this analyzer, and they mean different things. The frequency range is 9 kHz to 7.5 GHz, which is how far it can tune. The 40 MHz real-time bandwidth is the instantaneous window it captures at one time.

Spectrum and spectrogram views then show signal occupancy, spurious components and RF activity that changes over time. A tracking generator is optional, so confirm whether the delivered unit has one.

Connect it safely

  1. First, read the maximum input power and DC limits in the manual.
  2. Next, add attenuation or a DC block between the source and the RF input.
  3. Then connect the USB cable to the computer running SignalVu-PC.

For receive-only work, an antenna can feed the RF input directly. However, never wire a high-power transmitter straight into the analyzer, because the input can take damage.

Rent for a survey or buy for the lab

A Tektronix RSA607A spectrum analyzer suits interference checks, product pre-scans and teaching labs. Lost in HCM lists it for rental and for sale, and it arranges service on request. Short projects often fit a rental, while a shared lab may prefer to own the unit.

Your request should name the frequency range, the signal levels, the options and the accessories. Also say when and where you need it. Then Lost in HCM confirms the exact unit and the terms.

Tektronix RSA607A spectrum analyzer questions

Does the package include a computer?

No. The analyzer needs a compatible external computer, and you should not assume one comes with it.

Is a tracking generator built in?

It is optional. Ask Lost in HCM to confirm the installed configuration.

Why does the 40 MHz figure differ from 7.5 GHz?

The 7.5 GHz figure is the tuning range. The 40 MHz figure is the window it captures in real time at once.
