Description
Clock drift and pulse timing errors are hard to see on a scope, so a counter helps. The Tektronix FCA3120 frequency counter measures them directly. It reads up to 20 GHz and resolves single-shot time intervals down to 50 ps, so it suits oscillator and timing work on the bench.

Measuring frequency and time
First, start with frequency and period readings to examine an oscillator. Then use time-interval readings to compare two timing signals, one on input A and one on input B. Frequency resolution is 12 digits per second, and phase resolution is 0.001 degree. Also, USB and GPIB let you log results from a computer.
Seeing variation, not only a number
TrendPlot, a histogram and measurement statistics show how readings spread across repeated measurements. For example, a drifting clock leaves a visible slope on the trend. Likewise, a noisy trigger widens the histogram.
When the Tektronix FCA3120 frequency counter fits
- Checking clock sources in electronics development.
- Comparing pulse timing in maintenance work, such as repair checks.
- Tracking frequency stability over hours.
- Automated timing tests with USB or GPIB control.
Connect it safely
First, use the input the manual specifies for your signal frequency. Then microwave measurements use the high-frequency input where one is fitted. Confirm voltage limits, termination and grounding before you connect anything. Above all, never connect a counter input directly to mains power.
However, remember that a fine display does not guarantee accuracy. The optional oven timebase improves stability, so state the stability and calibration you need in your request.
Rent or buy through Lost in HCM
Rent the Tektronix FCA3120 frequency counter for a timing study or a product audit. Buy it instead when your lab checks clocks every week. Lost in HCM confirms price, condition and availability, while SMK Vietnam lists the item. To begin, request a quote from Lost in HCM with your frequency range, signal levels and accessories. You can also see other frequency counter rentals, visit the Tektronix website, or contact SMK Vietnam.
FCA3120 questions
Does 12 digits per second mean the counter is that accurate?
No, because resolution describes how finely the display reads, not how close the reading is to the true value. Accuracy depends on the timebase, the signal quality, the trigger settings and the measurement interval.
Which interfaces does the FCA3120 offer?
It has USB and GPIB remote interfaces. So either one can connect the counter to a control computer for automated tests.
Do I need the oven timebase?
The oven timebase is optional, so choose it when your task needs better stability, and tell Lost in HCM the stability and calibration you require.
