Description
Many crystal oscillators and logic clocks run below 300 MHz, so a counter with that ceiling covers a lot of bench work. The Tektronix FCA3100 frequency counter reads up to 300 MHz and resolves single-shot time intervals down to 50 ps. Also, Lost in HCM lists it for rental and sale.

Two jobs in one instrument
The FCA3100 counts frequency and also times intervals. First, use frequency and period readings to check an oscillator. Then compare two timing signals with time-interval readings, feeding one signal to input A and the other to input B.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum frequency | 300 MHz |
| Single-shot time resolution | 50 ps |
| Frequency resolution | 12 digits/s |
| Phase resolution | 0.001 degree |
| Remote interfaces | USB and GPIB |
| Timebase | Optional oven timebase |
Reading the results
TrendPlot shows how a reading drifts, and the histogram shows how it spreads. Measurement statistics then summarize repeated readings, so you can judge stability without exporting data. Also, a computer can log and automate the work over USB or GPIB.
Where the Tektronix FCA3100 frequency counter fits
- Clock checks on boards in development, because drift shows up as a slope.
- Pulse timing during repair or maintenance, so a technician can compare two signals.
- Frequency stability tracking over hours, such as warm-up studies.
- Automated timing tests, plus quick bench checks in production.
Resolution is not accuracy
Twelve digits per second describes how finely the counter reads. However, accuracy depends on the timebase, the signal quality, the trigger settings and the measurement interval. If you need better stability, ask about the optional oven timebase. Then state the stability and calibration you expect. Finally, check the voltage limits, termination and grounding before you connect a signal, and never connect an input directly to mains power.
Rent for a study or buy for the bench
Rent the Tektronix FCA3100 frequency counter for a timing study or a product audit. Buy it once clock checks become a weekly routine. Lost in HCM confirms price, condition and availability individually, while SMK Vietnam lists the item.

FCA3100 questions
Is 300 MHz enough for my clock?
It is enough when your signal stays at or below 300 MHz. For anything faster, ask Lost in HCM about a counter with a higher ceiling.
What does 50 ps single-shot resolution mean?
It is the finest time step the counter resolves in one interval measurement. However, resolution still differs from accuracy.
Can I control it from a computer?
Yes. USB and GPIB are both available, so a script can collect readings.
