Description

When a plant runs hundreds of torque tools, sending each one out for every check gets slow and costly. The Snap-on VERSATEST torque tester brings that work in-house. Snap-on calls it a laboratory grade indicator for precise torque wrench testing and calibration, and it is the heart of the Versatest family.

Snap-on VERSATEST torque tester, electronic torque tester and calibrator indicator

How the system fits together

The VERSATEST is the indicator unit. It reads torque from TTC series transducers, which Snap-on offers in ranges from 15-200 in-oz up to 200-2,000 ft-lb. Each transducer carries a memory chip that identifies its range. So the indicator recognizes the sensor when you plug it in, and the transducer keeps its calibration data when you move it to another VERSATEST.

Accuracy you can document

Snap-on lists the indicator at ±0.25% of reading at 25 °C when calibrated with its TTC transducer. If you have not calibrated the transducer with that indicator, the system figure is ±0.5% of reading. In practice, that is a big step up from a typical shop-floor tester, so the VERSATEST suits a quality lab or a tool crib with formal procedures.

Features of the Snap-on VERSATEST torque tester

  • Four modes: Track, Peak Hold, First Peak and Power Tool.
  • Memory for 3,000 readings with date and time stamps.
  • Built-in SPC with mean, range, sigma, Cp and Cpk.
  • Seven units, including in-oz, in-lb, ft-lb, N·m, dN·m, kg·cm and kg·m.
  • Serial ports for a printer and a PC, plus an analog output.
  • Interface for a remote foot switch to send or print results.

Who should consider it

Automotive and aerospace suppliers often need traceable records for every torque tool. Likewise, heavy equipment and energy companies run large wrench fleets that justify an in-house lab. The VERSATEST also pairs with Snap-on loaders, which take the operator’s arm out of the measurement.

Practical tips

Set up the indicator in a stable room, because Snap-on specifies accuracy at 25 °C. Also keep transducers in their cases and log their serial numbers. Finally, send the indicator and transducers for periodic calibration to an accredited lab, since your in-house results depend on them.
