Description
Field crews often carry their heavy wrench to the job rather than the job to the bench. The Snap-on TQR400E torque wrench suits that kind of work. It is a 3/4″ drive click-type wrench that sets from 130 to 400 ft-lb. In addition, its three-piece body comes apart for storage and transport.

How the TQ series works
Most click wrenches load a heavy coil spring. The TQ series uses a split-beam measuring element instead, so the wrench has fewer moving parts and less friction. You set it with a thumb screw, which Snap-on says is faster than cycling a micrometer handle. A guard then stops the setting from moving by accident. Also, the handle shows a conversion table to N·m.

Accuracy and direction
Lost in HCM files this model under ±4% accuracy. However, Snap-on’s UK brochure adds a condition for the TQR400E and TQR600E. They hold ±4% of setting in the orientations Snap-on lists, and ±5% in other positions. Accuracy runs clockwise from 20% of capacity to full capacity. The wrench is not reversible, so it does not suit left-hand threads.
Work that fits a 130-400 ft-lb wrench
- Wheel nuts and U-bolts on trucks, buses and trailers.
- Track and undercarriage bolts on small excavators.
- Pump, motor and gearbox base bolts in plant maintenance.
- Steel connections on conveyors and racking.
For targets above 400 ft-lb, step up to the TQR600E. Below 130 ft-lb, a 1/2″ TQ series model gives finer control.
Care of the TQR400E
Snap-on seals the ratchet head and the neck of the Snap-on TQR400E torque wrench, so dust and grit stay out of the mechanism. Even so, wipe the wrench after site work and pack it in its case. Then send it for a calibration check on your normal cycle.
