Description

Fishing ports such as Phan Thiet and Nha Trang keep hundreds of small diesel boats at sea. Between trips, engine shops on the quay rebuild pumps, heads and gearboxes in a hurry. The Snap-on TESI70 Torqometer gives those mechanics a clear newton meter reading on a 3/8 inch drive. One needle sweeps the dial as the bolt tightens, so the value is never a guess.

Engine room jobs between 14 and 70 N·m

Under Snap-on’s Standard grade, readings stay within 2% from 20% of full scale up to full scale. On this dial, that band runs from 14 N·m to 70 N·m. Typical marine joints in that window include:

  • Raw water pump covers and impeller housing bolts.
  • Exhaust elbow and heat exchanger end cap bolts.
  • Outboard lower unit and gearcase cover bolts.
  • Alternator, belt tensioner and engine mount bracket bolts.

Cylinder head and main bearing bolts are another story. They often need more torque or a turn angle, so follow the engine maker’s sheet.

Choosing between TESI60, TESI70 and TESI75

Snap-on’s newton meter table puts three close sizes on the same 3/8 inch drive and 12-1/2 inch body. The TESI60 reads to 60 N·m and the TESI70 to 70 N·m, both in 2 N·m steps. Meanwhile, the TESI75 reaches 75 N·m with finer 1 N·m steps. So pick the Snap-on TESI70 Torqometer when your top values sit near 60 to 70 N·m and 2 N·m marks are fine enough.

Salt, spray and the PB9 case

Salt air on a quay attacks bare steel within days. Therefore, wipe the TESI70 with a lightly oiled cloth after each job and store it in its PB9 case. Keep the case off the boat deck, too. Also never pull past 70 N·m or use the dial to free a seized bolt, as Snap-on warns. Then send it out for periodic recalibration with a lab you trust.

Marine mechanic questions

Does the TESI70 read left-hand threads?

Yes. Snap-on states the 2% rating clockwise and counterclockwise, so the same dial works on reverse threads.

Which TESI70 version marks the peak?

The TESI70FU has a second needle that shows the torque achieved. The TESI70L adds a light that flashes at the target instead.

Can I use it on a wet deck?

Work in a dry spot when you can. Water inside the dial can fog the crystal and harm the mechanism, so dry the tool at once if it gets wet.
