Description

A 3/8 in socket on a Y body usually means a ratchet head, but a ratchet is not always the best choice. The Snap-on QYSD12A fixed head swaps the pawl for a solid square. As a result, the drive line stays short and stiff, with no gear play between body and socket.

Fixed QYSD12A versus the ratcheting QYD12A-80

Head Type O.D. Depth
QYSD12A Fixed 1 in 1 in
QYD12A-80 Ratcheting 1-1/4 in 9/16 in

The fixed head is 1/4 in narrower, so it gets closer to a wall or a casting rib. However, it stands 7/16 in taller, which matters under a low cover. So measure both width and height around the joint before you choose.

Rating and bodies for the Snap-on QYSD12A fixed head

The UK Torque Brochure lists 1,200 in-lb for the QYSD12A. In other units, that is 100 ft-lb, close to 135.6 N·m. CAT1500i prints no limit in its text, and the partner listing gives none either. Within that cap, the CTECH2Y100A ControlTech fits neatly, since its scale ends at 100 ft-lb. By contrast, the QC3P150 preset reaches 150 ft-lb, so keep its value at 100 ft-lb or less with this head. The QD3IN200B dual-range body also needs a cap near 135 N·m.

The QYSD12A in the fixed-head family

Snap-on’s 3/8 in fixed heads come in two shanks: the QJSD12A for J bodies and the Snap-on QYSD12A fixed head for Y. Both share the 1 in O.D. and the 1 in depth. One size up, the QYSD16A gives Y bodies a 1/2 in square. In addition, the QYSD series sits 3.00 in from pin to fastener center, like other standard Y heads.

Habits that keep the Snap-on QYSD12A fixed head accurate

Because the head cannot ratchet, spin the nut most of the way with a hand ratchet or a nut runner. Then fit the torque wrench for the last pull only. Lift and reset between swings, and keep the socket fully seated on the square. Also inspect the square corners now and then, since a rounded drive lets the socket rock. Snap-on warns against breaking fasteners loose with its torque bodies.

Fixed 3/8 in Y head: quick checks

Why choose a fixed head over a ratchet at 3/8 in?

It is narrower and has no pawl to wear. However, you must lift the wrench between swings.

Will the QYSD12A fit a J body?

No. Its Y shank needs a Y body, and J wrenches take the QJSD12A instead.

What limit applies on a CTECH2Y100A?

Both the head and that body top out at 100 ft-lb, so the full ControlTech scale stays usable.
