Description

At 1-1/16 in, Snap-on offers no solid 6-point flare nut head. So for a rigid, non-ratcheting grip at this size, the Snap-on QYRX34A flare nut head is the solid option. It closes a 12-point slotted ring around the nut and locks into any Y-shank body.

Specs that hold across Snap-on sources

  • Opening: 1-1/16 in, 12-point.
  • Shank: Y (0.560 in), as for every QYRX head in the US catalog.
  • Pin to fastener center: 3.00 in.
  • Neighbors: QYRX32A at 1 in and QYRX36A at 1-1/8 in.

Do not confuse thread size with hex size

A JIC -12 fitting has a 1-1/16 in thread, yet its nut hex is larger. Therefore, this head will not fit most -12 JIC nuts. Many 1/2 in refrigerant flare nuts, on the other hand, use a 1-1/16 in hex, while some use 15/16 in. You will also see this hex on some large unions on compressors, coolant loops and lube lines. In every case, measure across the flats rather than reading the fitting size.

Solid QYRX34A or the ratcheting RTWH68YSL

Snap-on also makes a 1-1/16 in ratcheting head, the RTWH68YSL. It speeds up nuts that need many turns in a short arc. However, it sits 4.43 in from the pin, so click settings need a correction. The Snap-on QYRX34A flare nut head keeps the standard 3.00 in spacing instead. As a result, QD bodies need no length math with it, which keeps setup simple on a production line.

Y bodies for big tube nuts

  • QD3IN200B dual range, 40-200 N·m (37-140 ft-lb).
  • QC3P200 preset, 40-200 ft-lb, for one repeated value.
  • CTECH2Y100A ControlTech, 5-100 ft-lb, with stored readings.

Snap-on’s catalog and UK brochure give slightly different maximum ratings for this head. So confirm the limit with Lost in HCM before you set a value near the top of a body.

Working safely at 1-1/16 in

Hold the backup fitting with a second wrench, because a large nut can twist the tube. Then pull smoothly until the click and stop. Also never use the head to break a seized nut loose, since Snap-on warns against that for torque tools.

QYRX34A, answered

Will the QYRX34A fit a -12 JIC nut?

Usually not. The -12 thread is 1-1/16 in, but the nut hex is bigger, so measure it.

Is there a 6-point head at 1-1/16 in?

Not in Snap-on’s US catalog. The 6-point inch table jumps from 1 in to 1-1/8 in.

What rating should I use?

Snap-on’s documents differ a little. So ask Lost in HCM which limit applies to your order.
