Description
Some 15/16 in tube nuts need more torque than a J-shank head can take. The Snap-on QYRX30A flare nut head fills that gap. It slips a slotted 12-point ring over the line and locks into a Y-shank (0.560 in) body. Snap-on gives it a maximum recommended torque of 146 ft-lb, or about 198 N·m.

The 15/16 in row across Snap-on’s flare charts
| Part | Ring | Shank | Max. torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| QJRXS30A | 6-point | J (0.425 in) | 60 ft-lb |
| QYRXS30A | 6-point | Y (0.560 in) | 146 ft-lb |
| QYRX30A | 12-point | Y (0.560 in) | 146 ft-lb |
So the QYRX30A shares its limit with the 6-point Y head. Between those two, the ring style decides, not the rating. In contrast, the J version stops at 60 ft-lb, and a firmer joint rules it out.
When twelve points suit the QYRX30A job
Twelve points let the QYRX30A drop onto a nut at twice as many angles as a 6-point ring. That helps when a bracket or a second line blocks the handle. On the other hand, a 6-point ring bears further from the corners of the hex. So for a worn or soft nut, the QYRXS30A may be the safer choice. For clean steel fittings in a cramped spot, the Snap-on QYRX30A flare nut head usually works better.
Y bodies for a 146 ft-lb head
- QC3P150 preset, 30-150 ft-lb: lock it at or below 146 ft-lb for repeat line work.
- QC3P200 preset, 40-200 ft-lb: its scale runs past the head limit, so cap the setting.
- CTECH2Y100A ControlTech, 5-100 ft-lb: the full scale stays under the head rating.
Snap-on quotes QC bodies at ±4% clockwise from 20 to 100% of full scale. Therefore choose a body whose band covers your value well above its floor. In addition, the QYRX30A sits 3.00 in from the retaining pin to the fastener center, like every QYRX head.
A hydraulic manifold job for the Snap-on QYRX30A flare nut head
Picture a press or a mobile crane with a 15/16 in tube nut tucked behind a manifold. A socket cannot pass the tube, while an open-end wrench may spread the nut. The QYRX30A wraps the hex through its slot, and the Y body then signals at the set value. As a result, every fitting on that circuit gets the same final torque. Still, measure each nut first, since similar fittings can carry other hex sizes.
Looking after the QYRX30A slot
Snap-on’s catalog warns against using torque tools to free stuck fasteners. So crack a seized nut with a plain line wrench, then finish with the QYRX30A. Also check the slot edges for spreading after heavy use. Finally, Snap-on notes that periodic recalibration keeps the body accurate.
