Description
Mid-size hydraulic lines carry real pressure, so their tube nuts need a firm, measured final turn. The Snap-on QYRX28A flare nut head handles 7/8 in nuts for that job. Its 12-point ring slides over the tube through a narrow slot, and then the Y shank locks into an interchangeable torque body.

Snap-on QYRX28A flare nut head: key data
- Opening: 7/8 in, 12-point, slotted.
- Shank: Y type, 0.560 in.
- Maximum recommended torque: 133 ft-lb, about 180 N·m.
- Outside diameter: 1-13/32 in.
- Pin-to-fastener distance: 3.00 in.
Is 7/8 in the right size?
Check the nut with a caliper before you settle on the QYRX28A, because 7/8 in sits between two close neighbors. The QYRX26A covers 13/16 in at 117 ft-lb. On the other side, the QYRX30A covers 15/16 in at 146 ft-lb. In addition, Snap-on makes a 6-point QYRXS28A in the same 7/8 in size and the same 133 ft-lb rating. Pick that one for soft or rounded nuts. However, a J-shank body can only take the QJRXS28A, and that head stops at 60 ft-lb.
Matching a body to the 133 ft-lb rating
Most 7/8 in fittings call for a value well inside the head rating. Still, the body must reach your spec without passing 133 ft-lb. For example:
- QD3IN200B dual-range body: 37 to 140 ft-lb, so keep the setting at 133 or below.
- QC3P150 or QC3P200 preset bodies: set once for a repeat job, under the same cap.
- CTECH2Y100A ControlTech wrench: reads up to 100 ft-lb, so it suits only lower specs with this head.
The QYRX28A keeps the standard 3.00 in Y spacing. As a result, the QD bodies read true with no length math, while ControlTech wrenches apply their stored head-length factor.
Plant jobs for a 7/8 in flare nut head
Teams use this size on hydraulic tube runs for injection molding machines, presses and mobile equipment. It also fits refrigeration and chiller lines with large flare fittings. In every case, the slot lets the Snap-on QYRX28A flare nut head reach the nut without taking the line apart.
Keeping the QYRX28A accurate
First, clean hydraulic oil off the ring before each use, so the points grip evenly. Next, look for a widened slot, which shows an earlier overload. Then return the head to its case rather than a loose drawer. Above all, use it for final tightening only, never to break a fitting loose.
