Description

Big nuts in narrow gaps are where a socket gives up first. The Snap-on QYO72ARTH open end head takes on that job with a thin 2-1/4 in jaw. It slides onto the flats from the side, then locks into a Y-shank (0.560 in) body. As a result, you get a calibrated value on a nut that no socket can reach.

The top of the thin Y range

In CAT1500i, the thin inch Y heads start at 1-1/2 in and stop at this 2-1/4 in size. Every one of them carries a 160 ft-lb rating, about 217 N·m. Meanwhile, the J column has no thin head at 2-1/4 in. It jumps from 2-1/8 in straight to 2-11/16 in, and those J heads stop at 60 ft-lb. So for a 2-1/4 in nut, the QYO72ARTH is the only thin jaw in that table.

Body scales next to a 160 ft-lb jaw

Y body Range (CAT1500i) What limits the setting
CTECH2Y100A 5-100 ft-lb The body tops out first
QD3IN200B 37-140 ft-lb The body tops out first
QC3P150 30-150 ft-lb The body tops out first
QC3P200 40-200 ft-lb The head: preset no higher than 160 ft-lb

Only the QC3P200 can pass the head rating. On that preset body, therefore, the value needs a firm cap. Note also that Snap-on ships no calibration certificate with its preset bodies, while the QD3IN200B comes with one.

Jam nuts and gland nuts: where the Snap-on QYO72ARTH open end head fits

A standard 1-1/2 in hex nut usually measures 2-1/4 in across the flats. Nuts like that often lock a shaft, a tie rod or a cylinder gland in place. On those parts, the spec tends to be low for the thread size, because the nut only holds a position. So the 160 ft-lb ceiling can still cover the job. However, measure the nut and read the spec before you order. If the value runs higher, look at the heavier QXO and QZO open end series for X and Z bodies.

Pin spacing behind the 2-1/4 in jaw

QYO heads sit 3.00 in from the retaining pin to the fastener center. That matches the spacing of other Y heads, such as the QYRX flare rings. Snap-on also describes its QD system heads as consistently sized from pin to fastener center, so a QD body needs no length math. For a ControlTech body, the built-in calibration factor covers head length as well.

2-1/4 in thin jaw FAQ

Is there a J-shank thin head at 2-1/4 in?

Not in CAT1500i. Its J thin heads skip from 2-1/8 in to 2-11/16 in, so this Y head covers the size on its own.

What metric size is 2-1/4 in?

It equals 57.15 mm. So test the jaw on a metric part before you rely on it.

Why use a thin head instead of a crowfoot?

A crowfoot adds length to the wrench, so you must correct the setting. The QYO72ARTH keeps the 3.00 in QYO spacing, so a QD body reads as set.
