Description

Many plants standardize on Y-shank bodies for mid-range work, yet keep their socket sets in 1/2 in drive. The Snap-on QYD16A ratcheting head links the two. It locks into the end of a Y body and gives it a 1/2 in ratcheting square for those sockets.

QYD16A dimensions and service parts

  • Square drive: 1/2 in, ratcheting.
  • Shank: Y (0.560 in).
  • Head O.D.: 1-5/8 in; depth: 3/4 in.
  • Ratchet service kit: RKRS936.
  • Pin to fastener center: 3.00 in (QYD series).

The J-shank QJD16A shares the same O.D., depth and kit as the Snap-on QYD16A ratcheting head. So the two heads feel alike in the hand, and only the shank and spacing differ.

Why we print no limit for the Snap-on QYD16A ratcheting head

The sources disagree on this head’s maximum working torque. The partner listing gives 160 ft-lb, while the UK Torque Brochure shows 2,400 in-lb, or 200 ft-lb. Meanwhile, the CAT1500i text prints no value at all. Rather than guess, we leave the figure out. Ask Lost in HCM to confirm the rating before you run a Y body near its top.

Y bodies that drive 1/2 in sockets through the QYD16A

A QC3P150 preset suits a station that torques one 1/2 in socket joint all shift. For mixed values, the QD3IN200B dual-range body spans 40-200 N·m. Snap-on says its dual-range bodies take heads sized to one pin-to-fastener length, so no adjustment sums apply. On the other hand, the CTECHYM1200 adds a digital readout for 5-100 ft-lb work. Whichever body you pick, keep it under the rating that Lost in HCM confirms.

Long rundowns with the QYD16A

A ratchet earns its place on long studs and threaded rods. You spin the nut down in short swings, then make the final pull without refitting the wrench. However, set the direction before each pull, and keep chips and coolant out of the pawl. When the ratchet starts to skip, fit the RKRS936 kit rather than buying a new head. Snap-on also warns against breaking fasteners loose with its torque tools.

QYD16A answers

How does the QYD16A differ from the QYD16SL?

The SL head sits farther out, at 4.43 in from pin to fastener, and uses the RKRS80A kit.

Can a J-shank wrench use the QYD16A?

No. J bodies take the QJD16A, which keeps the same 1/2 in drive and 1-5/8 in O.D.

Will standard 1/2 in sockets fit the QYD16A?

Yes. Snap-on states that these heads let its bodies work with sockets, crowfoot wrenches and similar attachments.
