Description
Y-shank torque bodies often work on mid-range bolts, yet many of those bolts still take 3/8 in sockets. The Snap-on QYD12SL-80 ratcheting head joins the two. It puts a 3/8 in ratcheting square drive on a Y (0.560 in) shank. On top of that, its SL spacing places the drive farther from the retaining pin than a standard Y head.

Catalog row for the Snap-on QYD12SL-80 ratcheting head
| Square drive | 3/8 in |
|---|---|
| Shank | Y (0.560 in) |
| Head O.D. | 1-1/4 in |
| Head depth | 9/16 in |
| Ratchet service kit | RKRF80 |
| Center of fastener to retaining pin | 4.43 in (QYD-SL series) |
Snap-on prints these values in the ratcheting square drive head table on page 340 of CAT1500i.
SL or A: two 3/8 in Y heads
Snap-on makes a second 3/8 in Y head, the QYD12A-80. Both share the 1-1/4 in head, the 9/16 in depth and the RKRF80 kit. Spacing is the real difference. The QYD12A-80 sits at 3.00 in from pin to fastener, while the QYD12SL-80 sits at 4.43 in. So the SL head reaches about 1.4 in farther into a recess. Unlike the 1/2 in pair, which uses two different kits, both 3/8 in Y heads take the same RKRF80. As a result, one spare kit covers either head.
Reading the wrench with a longer head
A torque wrench reads true only at the head length it was set up for. Because the Snap-on QYD12SL-80 ratcheting head adds reach, the torque at the bolt can drift from the scale value on some bodies. Snap-on sizes the heads for its dual-range bodies from pin to fastener center, so those standard heads need no math. However, the catalog gives no correction for SL spacing. So check your body’s manual, or prove the setup on a tester before production.
Y-shank bodies to pair with the QYD12SL-80
Page 339 lists Y-shank preset bodies such as the QC3P150, set within 30 to 150 ft-lb, and the QC3P200, within 40 to 200 ft-lb. Snap-on does not print a working limit for this head in the text we checked. Therefore, ask Lost in HCM for the head rating before you set a body near its top. Also confirm that your body carries a Y shank, since J and X heads will not fit it.
Recess jobs for a 3/8 in Y head
Long reach helps where a bolt sits inside a pocket, such as a pump end cover or a motor flange with a raised rim. There, the extra spacing keeps the wrench tube clear of the lip. In addition, the 3/8 in drive takes common sockets and crowfoot wrenches, which Snap-on names as uses for these heads. When the QYD12SL-80 ratchet starts to skip, fit the RKRF80 kit. Never use the head to free a seized bolt.
