Description

Hydraulic presses and large injection molding machines in Vietnam often carry 36 mm nuts on their main lines. The Snap-on QXOM36A open end head reaches those nuts from the side on an X-shank (0.735 in) torque body. So you can tighten an M24 nut or a heavy tube nut while the bolt, pipe or hose stays in place.

Press lines and tube nuts that call for the QXOM36A

Under ISO 4032, and in DIN 934 as well, M24 hardware takes a 36 mm wrench. In addition, ISO 8434-1 uses 36 mm for the 20S and 22L tube nuts on 24-degree fittings. That makes the Snap-on QXOM36A open end head useful on press cylinders, accumulator lines and M24 frame bolts. For example, a crew can torque a 22L pressure line on a molding machine without opening the circuit. Still, measure the hex first, because worn or painted nuts can read differently.

What Snap-on prints for the Snap-on QXOM36A open end head

  • Opening: 36 mm, open end.
  • Shank: X, 0.735 in.
  • Outside diameter: 74 mm.
  • Head depth: 15 mm.
  • Fastener center to retaining pin: 4.50 in, as on every QXOM head.

Both Snap-on catalogs agree on these sizes. However, they show different maximum torque values for this jaw, so we leave the rating out.

X bodies against an open QXOM36A limit

X body Scale Note
QD3IN350A, dual scale 70-350 N·m (59-251 ft-lb) No setting correction for QD heads
QC4P300, preset 60-300 ft-lb Lock the setting with care
CTECH3X250A, electronic 12.5-250 ft-lb Ask how to set it for this head

All three reach far up the range. Therefore, get the QXOM36A limit in writing before you work in the upper part of any scale.

Other 36 mm shanks next to the QXOM36A

CAT1500i lists a 36 mm jaw for all four shanks: the QJOM36A, QYOM36A, QXOM36A and the dual-pin QZOM36ADP. So if a joint needs more than an X head can take, the Z version is the next step. On the other hand, a light lock nut may only need a J or Y body.

QXOM36A questions from press and molding crews

Can the QXOM36A tighten a 22L tube nut?

Yes, if the nut has the 36 mm hex that ISO 8434-1 gives the 22L and 20S sizes. Support the tube while you pull, so the line does not twist.

Who confirms the working limit of the QXOM36A?

Snap-on’s two catalogs print different maximum values for it. Lost in HCM can confirm the figure that applies when it quotes.

Does a 1-7/16 in nut work in the QXOM36A?

No. That inch hex is about 36.5 mm, so the jaw would grip the corners. Snap-on lists the QXO46A for 1-7/16 in nuts on X bodies.
