Description

Plenty of M14 hardware on European and older Japanese machines carries a 22 mm hex, one step above the ISO part. The Snap-on QJXM22A box end head grips that size with a closed 12-point ring. Because it rides on the light J shank, a fitter can still work one-handed near a housing wall and finish each nut on a click.

Measure first: 21 mm or 22 mm?

ISO 4032 sets the M14 nut at 21 mm across flats. However, DIN 934 and the older JIS table both use 22 mm. A 22 mm ring on a 21 mm nut sits loose, so it can round the corners under load. Therefore, read the hex with a caliper rather than trusting the thread size on the drawing. In addition, some plugs and unions use a 22 mm hex, so the QJXM22A has uses beyond bolts.

What Snap-on prints for the 22 mm J ring

Opening 22 mm, closed 12-point ring
Shank J (0.425 in)
Outside diameter 32 mm
Head depth 14 mm
Fastener center to retaining pin 2.50 in (QJXM series)

Snap-on’s UK torque brochure prints these numbers, and the partner listing repeats them. So you can plan clearance for the QJXM22A with confidence: the ring needs about 16 mm of room from the nut center to the nearest wall.

Snap-on QJXM22A box end head versus the Y and X rings

Snap-on cuts the 22 mm ring for three shanks. The QJXM22A fits J bodies, the QYXM22A fits Y bodies, and the QXXM22A fits X bodies. They share one brochure row, so width and depth stay the same. As a result, the choice comes down to the joint value. Pick the J ring for light specs on soft housings or brackets. A hard steel M14 bolt, by contrast, usually belongs on the Y or X version.

The two Snap-on sources print different maximum ratings for the QJXM22A. For that reason, we leave the figure out, and Lost in HCM confirms it with your quote.

J bodies that take the QJXM22A

  • QC2I75 adjustable, 5-75 ft-lb, 13 in long.
  • QC2P75 preset, 5-75 ft-lb, for one fixed value on a line.
  • QD2IN100A dual scale, 20-100 N·m, with no length math at 2.50 in.
  • CTECH1J240A ControlTech, 1-20 ft-lb, for very low values.

Snap-on rates QC bodies at plus or minus 4% clockwise from 20% to 100% of scale. So on a QC2I75, settings from 15 ft-lb upward fall inside that band. Any of these bodies accepts the Snap-on QJXM22A box end head without an adaptor.

Before you order a QJXM22A

Does the QJXM22A suit an ISO M14 nut?

Usually not. ISO M14 nuts measure 21 mm, so the QJXM21A is the better match there.

Which 22 mm ring handles a firm torque spec?

Move to the QYXM22A or the QXXM22A. They keep the 22 mm opening but use larger shanks.

How deep and wide is the QJXM22A?

The ring is 14 mm deep with a 32 mm outside diameter, per Snap-on’s UK brochure.
